Steadicam Merlin Arm Brace

Hi All,

I shoot events with the Steadicam Merlin with my fully loaded DVX-100, and it really kills my wrist!!! My thumb is numb for two days after the all-day event. I guess from a pinched nerve or something.

I've been looking into ways of supporting my wrist while lugging the thing for hours. I currently use a wrist brace from Rite-Aid that has the metal reinforcements. While it helps, it doesn't keep the wrist from flexing under the stress.

The arm/vest system for the merlin really seems like overkill, especially when I want to keep relatively low key. Plus I just want a way to save my wrist for a lower cost.

Then I remembered the Glidecam Arm Brace HERE and then thought to myself: "Self, now wouldn't it be great if I found a way to fit the merlin onto that thing so I wouldn't kill myself each time I go out with it?"

Now I know there are two things getting in the way of making it work, the pipe on the arm brace is much thicker than what would fit the merlin, obviously, as I had a glidecam before (much prefer the steadicam). I'm not exactly sure what the diameter of a proper fitting bar for the merlin would be, neither do I know how to make an adapter for said bar to connect with the brace.

One thing that came to mind was: Buy the arm brace, buy a proper sized metal bar (to fit into the merlin) cut to length, and find some tube to jam into the arm brace, in which the merlin-fitting metal bar would go into. Make sense?

Crazy ghetto DIY idea, I know, but I was wondering if anybody has thought of this, or better yet, done it? I would go ahead and do it myself it it weren't for the fact I have no idea what the measurements of all of the pieces would be.

I would hope the pieces could come from some existing stuff I can pick up from a hardware store.

Any help would be appreciated from you guys!

Looks like it's not too tough a job. Most of your work will be in re-learning the difficult Merlin technique with the new arrangement.

What "extras" do you have on the cam, and what are your cookbook settings?

Don't sell yourself short on the arm and vest, since A)it seems like it would instantly solve your problem, and B) it comes with the new gimbal, which would be safer to use on a "stacked" camera than the stock gimbal which you don't want to overpush the 5 pound limit.
