Anyone use Blender?

played with it a long time ago, I remember very little about it, I hear modelling is extremely good. has built in games engines and even compositing!

Yep yep, and its FREE!!! Im going to play with it a bit more, it seems easy enough to learn.

Blender kicks freakin butt!!

And it's FREE!!

Not only that, there's some motion matching software out there for free that works with it!!!

Blender is pretty fantastic, but I for one don't think it is easy to learn. I can usually pick up a program an learn it top from bottom in a few hours, but with Blender, a few hours has yielded little for me besides a shaded cube...

I really want to get better at this. Can anyone recommend any good tutorials? There a some on Blender's website, but most of them are far more advanced than I...

The built-in game-engine stuff has my attention...

...hopefully not too big a departure from Lightwave/Modo/Rhino/Maya.

My brain is almost full, as it is.

Blender is quite tough to learn. You can watch a bunch of tutorials on the Blender website. Those helped me the most. Also try YouTube.

Who's using it for VFX - type work, though? It seems that most of the blender community are either 3d Artists (as in capital "A") or non-realistic animation oriented. I have found this guy who has done some cool stuff, but would like to see what others have done with blender (especially match-moved scene extension/replacements, etc).

After some playing with it, and exploring the site, I think this is kind of a tinkerers' and hobbyists' tool - a very powerful one. Possibly as powerful, in developed form, as Lightwave or Maya or Rhino...but not sit-down-and-use, to the same degree as those packages.

I played around with the Linux version maybe 4 or 5 years ago and back then it had potential. Who knows, maybe I'll install it again one of these days to play around with. I'd rather spend my time learning Lightwave and Maya to be honest...

Yeah, I use Blender every now and again, when I feel like doing some 3D. Yeah, it's definitely difficult to learn, but it is extremely powerful, for being a free program. I mean really it can do pretty much as much as you can throw at it! Heres the open movie, Elephants Dream, which is made entirely in Blender, including editing, sound fx, and compositing.

Andrew, looked at the DP reel in your sig. Looks awesome. Didn't notice any (blender) CG in it. Was there? Are there any blender examples of VFX stuff you can show? I'm curious how well the rendering engine is, pipeline, etc for VFX stuff. ... or anyone else.

Thanks
Joren

I've been watching that since it started production....I **LOVE** that movie and it looks amazing. I tried to model in Blender, but came to the quick conclusion that I'm not ready for modeling. I did do some *light* animation in it, and since I was familiar with keyframes from using After Effects, that part wasn't too bad.

This is the ONLY thing I've ever modeled AND animated in Blender (followed a tutorial on it)

Yes (The latest version) . Export a lightwave file .lws.

Oddly enough, that's what boujou does when it exports for C4D, although they give it a .c4d filename extension.

Thanks raptor haven't messed with it at all yet just wondering :). So just export a .lws from voodo or from C4D to voodo?

As others in this thread say - Blender can be a bit hard to learn - but when you've learned the terminology and basic shortcuts you will be astounded by it's power. The modelling philosophy ist just awesome - I love it. It makes some other commercial package feel clumsy and oldfashioned. And the node-system for acvanced composites and materials is great... and the recordable Game engine...wow! If you need render power - sign up at Respower.com and purchase unlimited rendering on their farm for as low as 20$ a month. Watch out for the next version 2.5 - it's gonna be great.
