1st ever DVXuser 3D Short Film collaboration?

well if solidworks can save in .obj format then any 3d app can import it.

In some of the interior "sets" I'm gonna need to fill it with lots of props eg, chairs, tables etc.. If you have time (much later on) then your more then welcome to start on them. Of course you don't have to use solidworks!

Hey,

I just stumbled into this thread. Will have to read the whole thing later, its 3am already. But maybe I can be part of the project. I'm also on max, and have done a few things, but not an expert for sure.

I haven't been very involved in character rigging and alot of motion/animation. been working mostly on still and fly-bys. I'm attaching some images of the last renderings I did. (also I have to work on reducing render times and being more efficient)

Let me know if you think I can help?

thanks,

Luis
ps: Nice to see you here tommy. (how come lightwave? over Max or Maya?)

thats amazing work!,

yes you most certainly could help me alot!

doing exteriors buildings is my weakest point, there is possibly two exterior scences that would require to do 3d buildings.

(a) Jump Scene,

I need a rooftop shot, at night, of ourse I don't need an entire city modelled that would be just plain crazy, I was thinking of doing the detailed forground elements in 3d, eg rooftops + external props such as fire exits + air con things + other stuff normally found on rooftops.

I wanted to somehow block the horizon view from camera that way I wouldn;t need to model anymore stuff, or I could just have a matte painting to extend the rest after the rooftop.

I've looked really hard and this website has images that best represent the kind of scenes I'm looking for, I'm not asking to have an entire city modelled, I'm taking about modelling just two rooftops, which is in view, and have the rest as a matte painting or very low models with textures (think google earth type, in fact if I could import those entire city into max from google that would good enough) because its in the background.

click on fisrt link and have a look through the pictures of the rooftop.

I you take a look at the pre-viz, you can see that the camera movements is small, so as to keep the modelling to a minimum.

Tell me you you think.

Hello, I would like to help. I model and composite but can do other things relating to video and CG. I work in Softimage for 3D (export available to a variety of formats). Please let me know what I can help with.

As with most, I can only offer the time I have to offer, but I should be able to help with some sets, or props in a timely fashion. I will try to stick it out until the projects completion but will have to catch whatever life is throwing. (The fact that it's a short piece is a major attractin)

Do you have a complete list of everything that needs to be modeled. It would be good if modelers can check-out things from the list and work on them, submit the finished model to a list for the texture artists, etc, etc.

I was looking at the storyboards and I kinda follow it along with the previz footage. If it is possible to pitch the trailer in voice, that would be cool too. It might help us all to get a good sense of the timing and action and mood.

Let's get it on.

Hey Anhar,

Ok I finally have time to go through the whole thread. I'll do it after this post. As for your compliment. Thank you so much. "Amazing" is a bit much I think, but thanks anyway.

I saw the rooftop images. no problem I'm sure we can whip something out.

I think Founder has a good idea here. Maybe creating a web site where we could all go and see the things that are yet to be completed, and see if anyone has been assigned/volunteered to do it. and as things get completed, the web site can show the images of the props, so people can get excited and see the progress taking place. :) (just a thought)

Hey Founder welcome aboard,

I did have a simple model list which was posted a few pages back, I will however re write it up in more detail. (the first model is almost complete).

They are going to mainly be interior shots, and one exterior shot (rooftop).

As for voice overs, a second thread was started in the scripting section, but not much has come out from there, it is still open to discussion though.

@Siniarch, I think keeping it as much possible in this thread would be just easier to keep track off (also I don't know how to set up such a website) , on the other hand if some-one is willing to set some kind of website up then by all means that would be most welcome.

Do we have any matte painters?

Check out www.formfonts.com

Lots and lots and lots of models, all categories, available for a very incidental membership fee. Particularly architectural, furnishings, hardware and ID type stuff.

Most of the models are in .skp (Sketchup) format; a lot of them are also there in 3DS and .lwo format. And, you can easily convert .skp files to 3DS or .obj format.

Man, I really need to get into this 3D stuff... I just installed the Lightwave demonstration version. I'm going to pick up a few books... please tell me it's not that hard to do...

You should check out Modo. It's a 3D app by the programmers (but not the businesspeople) who created Lightwave (basically the cog-cutters got fed up with NewTek, and launched their own company).

It's similar enough to Lightwave in philosophy that I find it pretty transparent, to go from one to the other...seems like there's full file compatability...but it renders *much* faster. Does almost everything much faster, it seems.

Plus, it's cheaper than LW9.x and you should be able to do comparable work, with it.

Ok Anhar,

I finally was able to see the pre-viz in youtube.

I think its way too slow. if you see any movie trailer (specially for action movies) it goes Boom, Boom, Bam, Pow. (like the old batman)

I mean, it moves very fast. The idea is that fast cuts keep the the action going and feeling like its a fast paced movie.

The scenes you have selected, should not be on the screen more than 4-6 seconds maybe even less. with the exception of maybe the last one in bullet time. I don't mean we need a lot of new scenes, but for example, when the guy is running on the roof, you can have:
1. a wide of him running (tracking him on the side), 2. then cut to a CU of his face looking back, 3. then cut to his POV looking back at a few other guys running after him, 4. Back to the wide show, 5. cut to a camera between two buildings to show the gap that he must jump, 6. cut to the POV of the guys chasing maybe shooting their guns. maybe 7. a cut to CU of gun shooting the bullet, 8. a fast time follow of the bullet from the front as it leaves the bad guys, and the camera stops following the bullet and follows our hero's face once the bullet reaches him. 9. then you see his expression when he realizes he has to jump, 10. then back to a medium wide as he approches the jumt and takes the leap.
This scene, can take the same amount of time that the pre-viz took, should render as fast, the models can be the same, but it would be much more intersting.

I like the direction this is going in, but I think it needs much work. The story should be worked out as far as what the movie would be if there was a movie. the trailer will have to emphasize that. Remember, in restaurants its Location Location Location. In Movies its Story/Script, Story/Script, Story/Script.

When are you availabe to talk, I think this process needs to happen in a fast medium (verbal) just as the trailer needs to be fast. I don't mind calling you from here. it should only cost me a few cents a minute. or maybe we use skype or I'm in IM (hotmail) also. I know they have a voice and video. I'm in CAlifornia, so I'm GTM - 7 or 8 hrs. cant remember.

Siniarch, I agree with the timing, it was brought up before, what you have suggested does make it a lot better, I really like the idea of the CU of the gun shooting the bullets, and more cuts also makes sense.

I'm thinking that that could be shot in 60fps and then slowed down with twixtor or something? maybe add CG bullets and shells.

The only problem I'm having is actually design planning the models, I really need some location photos/ reference photos.

I can see possibly 4 CG sets needed:

(1) Office Room (Board Room type)

(2) Prison Set (Cell room, and corridoor only)

(3) Rooftop (Building roof A and B, some building props such as external air con) the background will just be a matte Painting/ skyline photo with added blur.

(4) Final Bullet freeze set, someone has suggested earlier that it could just be a 360* panorama (just using photoshop to stitch lots of photos into a 360 panorama), this may be actually work out better then a CG set. I was thinking a city centre with a water fountain or Hotel lobby, open to ideas.

drop me a PM i'll see if i can fish out my old Skype login.

Find all the images you can, of the kind of sets you need - Google image searches are actually very useful for this, especially if there's hi-res content matching your needs.

That's usually my first pass, whenever I need to do research for a new set.

I don't know if you are in the London area, but of course London is a fantastic booksellers' town; you should also find good hunting for reference, in any book store with a decent arts/photography section.

I've been googling alot :) , but at some point I'm going to need to actually go out and photograph real locations its the only way to get more detailed stuff.

I'll go check out arts section down at the local.

Luis - ahh, Lightwave... the 3d software made for the Amiga... I'm an Amiga nut and have an A3000 sitting on my desk right now... :) So Lightwave is special like that.

Sad Max - I'll have to check out Modo... I've heard great things about it. How does it compare with Lightwave v9.2?

anhar,
Just send me your phone Number via PM and a convenient time to call you. I have unlimited telephone to United Kingdom. :)

I gave my Amiga 4000 to Goodwill a few years back.

Wish I hadn't; I was done using it, but I didn't realize what a market there was, for old parts.

I haven't gotten deep enough into Modo to know how it compares across-the-board...but so far I like what I've seen.

Not really. I got it so that I could do some hardcore hardware-type programming just for the hell of it... quickly lost interest though and it made me realize that I really don't want to be a computer programmer... so now I just have it mainly for sentimental reasons.
