TOP 5 SHOTGUNS! (for those with a budget)- READ THIS!

jbrandon I recently purchased a Rode NTG-2 and it is a very hot mic. I have been pleased with the camera mount and boom qualitys of this mic. I have been meaning to post some audio clips but I haven't had time. I will get to it soon. It sounds good and records very true, quality in quality out.

I think it's easy to overstate what are basically minor sonic flaws in all of these excellent mics. I've used an ME-66 for two years now, and I don't have any particular complaints. That's not to say it's the best buy, just don't go crazy running out buying new mics just because somebody discovers an extra dB in the basement.

I say it because I've done it. And oh, I was sorry.

penfever - agreed. BUT this thread should in a lot of ways be used to buy your FIRST MIC. If you have one of the mics from 2 to 5, then the only mic I would buy to upgrade in these 5 mics would be the 416. The 416 will (generally speaking, in the hands of a pro) KILL the other mics on test here. Personally, I dislike the Me66, here in SA EVERYONE uses them just someone, somehow, duped everyone into thinking the Me66 and the 416 are interchangable mics.

They arent.

Hey all,
If I go with the Rode NTG-2 Shotgun... Should I pay the extra $20 and get the shock mount from B&H or save the money and get a better one... What protection / shock would you recommend for this mic? It comes with the SM3 for $20 bucks more....

I had a hard time deciding between this and the AT4073A for $300 more... But right now I think this is a good one to grow with... and I can probably get most of my money back on ebay when I upgrade...

Well this verifys my recent purchase of the Rode NTG-2 for exactly the reasons mentioned. I researched this same type of info for over a month before I ordered it and listened to countless comparisons on different sites. While I doubt this one thread will be the only source people will use to make their decision it will certainly help. My mic hasn't arrived yet(ordered Friday evening). Thanks for sharing.

Please let me know how you like your mic. Very curious.

Nice list Shawneous, checked out the 1 and 2 mics. Wish I could get those for free...
The ck93 is in my price range. Do you think this is a good price for it?

If you call them, they'll give you a phone-order only price. For me, it was just under $400 and I bought that exact mic from them. I love it! I've used it on a number of productions to good results.

I did a side-by-side comparison with my ck93 to a friend's ck63 and for quite a while, could not tell the difference. When I finally heard a tiny 1% difference, I actually preferred the ck93.

My ck93 was used for all the dialogue on this movie, see what you think

Excellent Cinematography and Sound.
The ck93 sounds really nice. But on some parts of the movie the sound seemed unbalanced. Almost like a lav or second mic was used. Like when he knocks on the door and talks with the sex offender. But, It could be my speakers.

Thanks for the phone call tip. Save me a hundred dollars. I was almost going to order that online.

That looks like a sweet deal. Wooden case. But I'm too scared to buy a no name brand.

then you will be full who pay for the name :-)
to make a mic with brand name you need to make at least 500 units
to make a mic without you dont have to make any significant numbers .

dont get me wrong that not they dont do something different, they just put a name on the same mic which comes under 3-4 different i know for sure .
these are the same but without any name so it doesnt cost you 600usd but 400 .
the brand name cost you 50% more

That's because that scene was shot in the foyer of an empty house, the reverb was intense. If you go to the sticky thread of lessons learned in the field and then look at the thread of my lessons learned, it has to do with this specific shoot.

you guys have left off the mkh50 - major player in the hyper field. lots of people use them over schoeps cmc systems...

hmmm, although, dont forget - a few of these mics arent even hypers at all... the 50 and the cmc641 are actually both supercardioid.

just nitpicking, but the super pattern is for my tastes much nicer.
