Suggestion for Canon Zoom lense

I'm trying to pick out a 70 to 200 or 80 to 200 canon lense (compatible with my SLR). I've heard that it needs to have manual aperture/focus. I'm having a hard time getting through the tech stuff and finding what I need.

Does anyone know of a particular Canon zoom lense that would work?

Thanks,

Jeremy

I've heared that the Canon FD 80-200 L lens is a favorite of old school shooters. I can't say that I've seen the images it produces first hand but it sounds like a solid lens. I think it usually sells for around $250 used on Ebay.

If you're using this with a 35mm Adapter, don't forget that you need all the light you can get and zooms are not always your best bet.

If you haven't already disscovered these sites, you might find that they are very helpful when comparing FD lenses:

It looks like KEH has this lens for sale for a little over $300:

These are both FD lenses. FD refers to the mount type. All of the Canon lenses made between the late 70s and the early 90s were FD mount lenses. FD lenses are almost exclusively manual focus opposed to auto focus, and the FD mount is one of the more common mounts that 35mm adapter manufacturers offer. The problem with auto focus lenses is that the aperture is controlled electronically so if you attach them to a 35mm adapter the aperture becomes locked.

That is all beside the point. The lens you linked is an FD lens and would work with an FD mount adapter and it might even look decent. The difference is that the L version that I mentioned earlier (L stands for luxury) includes fluorite (artificial crystal) and UD glass which cuts down on chromatic aberration.

Another issue to take into account is the length of the lens. It will put a lot of stress on the filter attachment. You should definitely put it on some rails if you buy it.
