Pictures Quality for DVCPRO HD project

I've done a considerable research on the forum about the subject and I'm still confused.

We have a DVCPRO HD 720 24p project and we're using a few pictures scanned at 600 dpi, .tiff and sRGB color space. I've got to these numbers consulting post production houses and a few peers.

We're running FCS 2, monitoring trough a Blackmagic Extreme HD card + HD Link on a 23" Apple Display.

The photos are looking average. It's coming out quite saturated and when we zoomed in it looks a bit soft. After some correction things get better but it's far from what I've expected.

Any suggestion to what should we try?

Remember the 600 dpi gets translated down to 72 dpi once you hit the timeline. Video is 72 dpi. The larger dpi in the scan, just means you get a much larger frame size (more pixels). So then when you want to do some fake pans or zooms or such, your raw image is already bigger than your frame and it won't hit you too hard.

Another thing is, are you monitoring all of this out on a broadcast monitor? FCP's internal proxy of images put onto a compressed timeline (so any codec but the uncompressed ones) looks so-so on the computer screen I find, but it should look fine on a monitor and once out to tape.

But anotherway to preserve it all better is at the end of everything, when you are locked and ready to go to tape, move out of the DVCPro HD timeline and to an uncompressed one. Then render out there. The images and other such add-ons will preserve more information. It won't make a difference to your footage, as you can't invent information/quality, but things that surpass the footage's native quality or add-on effects (including color correction) will look a bit better.

Cheers.

Since I posted we found some simple adjustments on the time line itself and the photos are looking better. At least the super saturating can be dealt with it.

We intend to color correct using Color on 720p and after that re-render everything on 1080i for a HDCAM 'print'. I'll see if we can re-import the pictures then.

Thanks.

Where did they come from/how imported/what format?

Noah

(35mm neg or digital source) 4x6 prints, most of then.

Imported by scanning on a Canon "CanoScan Lide 25".

Saved, cropped, corrected on Photoshop CS2.

600 dpi, .tiff and sRGB.
