Best Wide Angle for the HVX?

mainstreet, no offense but for most people that's not a usable picture. Sever distortion. Is there a solution that is reasonably priced that maintain perspective on subjects?

well not for movies I guess but for sports, docu, ENG type of work it looks very attractive considering the price...
The 16x9 better offers less distortion for its 900$...

As I mentioned in the post, distortion is something I wanted - a fisheye without the higher cost. Not for everyone. The distortion is a bit exaggerated
in that particular grab because I am only a couple of feet from the subjects.

Here is a grab (link) from my last shoot- not the best example because subjects are moving rapidly and there is motion blur. Obviously there is some barrel distortion, a characteristic I expected and wanted from a wide adapter. Not everyone will. The edge sharpness seems to be good on this lens.

In the still below, camera was traveling with subjects so focus is better on them.
Building is motion blurred.

Anyone know the difference between the Cavision Broadcast and Industrial versions of the adapters, besides price? Screw-on or bayonet, but quality wise?

The industrial is just the class in between most of the prosumer cameras (vx2100, gl2, ect.) and the broadcast lenses, basically anything larger than a 62mm thread, but less than broadcast size, is in the industrial class.

I see that cavision discontinued the previously mentioned model with the 82mm thread. They have a newer bayonet mount on their website now, anyone had any experience with it. Is it possibly better than the previously posted screen grab?

The price is very attractive, but if the picture has as much distortion as their discontinued model, I just can't see using it.

I am assuming that those pix are all from 16:9 footage but not shown in the correct aspect ratio, and that's why the people are squeezed, right?

no looks looks like barrel distortion something found in wide angles, I think he was trying to convey that to you.

what's the price? they want you to contact them for price info

I did contact them.
The list price is $398. I found them at Adorama yesterday for $329.
The Century is 369. The Century is well established and people in this forum seem to like it - for what it is - so I guess I'll spend the extra 30.00. Money well spent.

As a side note, when I originally was considering what camera to buy I actually was considering the HPX500 (which still makes me drool.) I've easily spent as much as that camera with all the extras and add-ons from the HVX200! money money money :-)

Hi all,

I just wanted to add to this thread now that I have a Century o.6x W/A lens for my HVX.

It's brilliant - way better than I had expected. It's very very wide, I've shot with a Z1 and Century's 0.3 lens and this one is far more subtle, without being all that much narrower.

The barrel distortion is way less than I had expected - I mean, yes, there is some barrel distortion of course, but it's not completely as bad as I thought it would be from reading this thread. In fact, I will probably add a little more fisheye effect to some shots in post for added effect.

And, as Barry confirmed above - those shots were 16:9, and so the people towards the centre of the images were squeezed because of that - not the lens. Stuff in the centre is pretty much completely normal.

last word? I love it.

I, too, ended up buying the century 0.6 and am very happy with it's performance. It definately does has some slight barrel distortion on the ends, but its far less noticeable than I had anticipated.
I'm a believer now.
It's also much beef-ier than I was expecting, well built.
The bayonet is definately a plus too, screwing in adapters that heavy gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Another vote for the .6 Century Wide. It's a great lens for the price. Especially useful for smoothing out tracking and handheld shots.

Fascinating. I'm certain Bill Turner told us that the threads were only a byproduct of manufacturing. Perhaps that was just for the DVX adapter, and maybe there's been some change for the HVX version? Either way, it's welcome news -- the lack of ability to add a protection filter was always a tad worrisome with that huge a hunk of glass hanging out there. :)

The clear/UV filter they sell at Century was the only 102 mm threaded filter I could find. I didn't search too hard, for what it's worth.
Can't be too long before others catch on and fill the need.
