Fake or Real mic comparison?? Please listen!

I've been listening to this mic comparison for a while. There is very bad mic placement/unpractical when shooting a film. The sounds/tests are inconsistent as well.

Anyway, the Rode ntg-2 sounds sooo fake. Almost robot like(too much gain?). Does the Rode ntg-2 really sounds like that?
Also, the 4073a has lots of background noise(other than her hitting the mic) Is this mic suppossed to give off that much background noise?

Please share your thoughts!

Am I missing something?

How do you figure bad mic placement? Looks balls-on to me.

And what is inconsistent about this test?

It's not a scientific test. It's a subjective, real-world, test. So could it be more consistent? Probably, but for practical purposes I'd say it's a good test. What are you listening to the test on, btw? On my monitors it (the Rode NTG-2 test) sounds great. On the PC speaker it was a littly gainy sounding, but what isn't.

Yeah the tests sound good to me on my 7506's. All sound about the same on the laptop speaker... like crap... anyways. Yeah it would be nice if they werent in a silent studio. Hard to judge rejection etc. but it does let you hear the nuances very well. This coupled with some tests outside near some traffic would be interesting.

We shot those direct to a Canon XL-2 - nothing fake about it. We bought all of those mics and begged to use a high end studio up the street for an hour to shoot it in. We did this just so folks could get a pretty good idea of what each mic sounded like without having to journey over to a showroom in LA or NY. It was a quick in and out mission, sorry if it wasn't perfect. Looking back on it, I wish we would have positioned each mic a good two feet above and rotated to hear the off-axis response as well as recorded to something a bit more high-end. Looks like Dan Brockett will be writing an article with more tests to take over where we left off. http://dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=98843
It ain't easy doing this type of thing, just buying all those mics out of pocket was a couple grand. Not to mention the time. I hope some folks found some good out of our efforts.

Guy-
Your test was perfect for it's intended purpose. You always produce great reviews on your site. Every time my video podcasts update, I check to see if there is a new DV creators video posted--- and my heart is heavy with sadness every day that a new review does not appear!!!! : )

That dude who posted that inquiry is obviously not very experienced, so you should consider the source on this.

Keep up the great work Guy! And crank out some more of that great content!!! I always recommend your tutorial on the Senn. G2 set-up to guys who need a quick fix in the field.

PS--- Who's the 'hot chick' in your videos?! She gets my vote for video vixen of the year. Yowza!!!
