Hours of PC-captured AVI into FCP?

I've got hours and hours of video captured in AVI DV format on a PC that I'd like to start using in FCP (5.1.4). Importing the AVIs brings up a warning which says "The following media files are not optimized for Final Cut Pro." Everything I've read says to import the footage into my project, then use Media Manager to recompress the AVIs into an optimized format.

Every time I do this, the new 'recompressed' files that are created are AVI files, not MOV files, and when I try to import them, I get the same error as before. I'm choosing recompression settings like "DV NTSC 48kHz Anamorphic" and "DV NTSC 48kHz". It doesn't matter if I choose to create a new project or not.

Is there something I'm missing here? How do I get Media Manager to recompress into a format that FCP thinks is 'optimal' ?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is a double-post. The dvxuser search engine won't allow me to search two- and three- letter words (like PC, AVI, and MOV).

Use Compressor man. Compressor can do batch processing. So build a template for the type of .MOV file you want the resulting clips to be, drag in all your clips, and apply that template to all the files. Then make sure to set the destination location to where you want all the .MOVs to be stored, and hit submit. Walk away and come back in a little while (depending on how much footage we're talking), and voila. If you have FCP 5.1.4 you have Compressor. If it wasn't installed, grab the install discs and get it onto your system asap.

cheers.

I do have compressor. I guess, then, my question is what are the "optimal settings" for use with FCP? Is there some CODEC that's native?
