Filming some school news stuff with my friends.
The setup was the NTG-1 shotgun on the 2nd channel, and the SM58 handheld on the first. This way my friend could host and interview with the handheld, but I also had the option to use the left track for audio or switch both to the shotgun when he was not talking.
I had levels peaking right into the red throughout the day, but for some reason there is an astronomical difference in the footage.
The right channel (SM58) is wayyy louder than the left (NTG-1)... At times when I was smart enough to monitor with my headphones, I could hear the SM58, but not the NTG-1 at all.
Periodically I turned it up the level on the NTG-1, and the volume did go up to a good listening level, but it also began to easily distort from being too loud. One situation was recording a game in a classroom, where the councillor would talk (need the level high), then the students would cheer and clap (volume blown out)
Any suggestions or comments as to what I could do to even out the difference between mics? Does the NTG-1 normally record at a seemingly low volume?
Thanks.
