Could someone tell me if there is a big quality difference between zeiss lenes and nikon? If so does anyone know how much more lines of res do you gain with one over the other?thanks

It would depend on the lens. Also, I'm not sure how to quantify lens quality with lines of resolution, you'd have to film some resolution charts with each one to compare.

It's not so much brand vs. brand, but model vs. model. Decide what kinds of specifics you need (macro zoom, telephoto, wide angle, mm size, fstop) and you can find a quality lens from either brand that will suit your specific needs, and if your lens matches your needs you should be satisfied with the picture and comfortable with using it.

I have Nikon and Zeiss, although I only have one Zeiss and that's in the 50mm.

I mainly got the Zeiss as they are fast F1.4 and whilst I can find Nikon in F1.4 I prefer to go brand new and get the Zeiss ones than risk a secondhand lens in a Nikon mannual fit.

iposiniditos on the boards shoots both and says that the Zeiss are sharper in his experience. He's shot some really fantastic stuff with both.

The Zeiss are bigger [more glass] and are supposed to borrow on technology they are using in the Zeiss motion picture Prime ranges. To quote:
"Incorporating new technical advances from the Zeiss Ultra Prime®, Master Prime® and DigiPrime® motion picture lens range, these optics are high resolution and solidly made with metal barrels"

I've yet to shoot anything proper to test the two 50mm I have side by side to make a comparisson.

I'd try to pm ipsoiniditos and see what he thinks and see if he has some side by side comparissons.

I mean one way to gain res is by not having the aperture set to open on the HVX. Try to be above F2.8 on the HVX. So if a 35mm lens in front of that can open up more like the Zeiss then by the time you lose light through filters and the 35mm adaptor you'll be able be at F2.8 or higher in the HVX. Of course there are Nikons that are F1.4 as well but are they new? Have they any internal damage you can't see until you shoot if you are buying secondhand?

Hope that helps...

I have a Nikon 50mm F1.2 I got off ebay. It's virtually new. Most of my other lenses are very sharp and are also like new.

Buy from www.keh.com They have a reliable grading system for lenses and you can get mint if you want to and if you want to pay that much.

taormina,

That's great, I'm going to keep that link! Fantastic.

My next lens will be a Zeiss Nikon 85mm, but for the ones I can't get in Zeiss I'll buy from here I think.

Brilliant !

Glad you liked it. My only beef with them is you cannot do paypal online - you must phone in for that.

Other than that, it's great because it allows you to pay as much as you want for the condition you want.

why do you lose res with the DVX all the way OPEN? I use a M2 and because of loss of light its hard NOT to use the camera all the way OPEN and most of the time thats still not enough light. but thats my own fault because of lack of extra lighting. i just confused why OPEN = loss in res?

I don't know the technicals of why the HVX loses Res at both wide open and also above F8. Its probably to do with light diffraction as it enters extremely open or extremely tight apertures that then hit the CCD. Can't be sure but I'll find out and post it.

What I do know is that Barry Green in his HVX book has thoroughly tested the HVX with resolution charts and has found that the image is affected when you hit extremes with the HVX lens at below F2.8 and above F8.

Lens Manufacturers make lenses that even in the extremes of apertures can perform consistently across the range of f stops and this maybe one of the things that had to be compromised by Panasonic when making such and excellent HD camera available for such a low price.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that the HVX is a bad camera. Quite the opposite, it is excellent which is why I went with one. Its just one of the little things that is a compromise for such excellence at an affordable price. For that I am willing to live with it!

The way round is to keep the HVX at a decent f stop like F2.8 - F5.6 and then let a lens like the Zeiss or Nikons that is designed to work at full open handle the rest !

Hope that helps, sorry its long winded.

Regards,
Richard M
