A new company called Opalux has developed a display that allows us to move away from RGB (a limited color space) and go to all colors, including ultraviolet and infrared. It can even be seen easily in harsh daylight.
A thorough article at New Scientist goes over what the technology does to get the entire colorspace. It's all done through merely changing the amount of electricity. So, all colors could probably be changed with one variable instead of three (edit: instead of RGB). This could also mean greater compression levels.
I think we are seeing the future if they are successful. Now the only thing we need is a sensor that can capture all possible color ranges too. Until that time, I hope a camera sensor is developed so we can capture VGB (violet, green, and blue). Then we could at least get the old colorspace used in Technicolor on these displays.
I love inventions!
