Tote Vision 703 or Ikan V8000HD?

These are very similar - I am looking for the best one for focusing a 35mm adapter. I know the marshall is better for judging the image but it is expensive / will be upgraded soon / nebtek is coming out with a better one. Since the Tote and the Ikan are ~700, which one would you get? The Tote seems to have better battery options and the Ikan is slightly bigger (8" vs. 7")

I paid 560usd for my totevision....thats the bare naked model without any accesories.
I got a petrol bag plcd2and i use a tekkeon battery to power it up.
Its a lot better then the lcd or viewfinder for focus.
I'm pretty sure the ikan and totevision offer similar performance.
If you mount it on the cam smaller is probably better.

I wanted the panasonic but it was too expensive and virtually impossible to get here in canada!

Probably very similar. I've used and reviewed the Ikan. It is nice for the money but with the connectors soldered to the unit (and I bet the Totevision does the same thing), it could break more easily than the Marshall, for example. But, look at it this way, with the Canadian dollar almost at par now with US $, it is not as expensive as it once was. My bottom line, either should be fine for the $. But if they fall apart soon and you are buying them twice, you've already paid for one Marshall which should last longer.

Just my US .02 = CDN .0190 (aprox) + GST

Yes the connectors is probably the biggest tradeoff.

The list prices for panasonic seem to be with the canadian $ when it was at its weakest. BT-LH80W has a list price of 3170$cad=2997$us.

Yes. It's a bit more CDN. The Marshall runs $1350 US at B&H. So, that's less than the cost of having to replace an Ikan after it breaks and you discover it will take 6 weeks or more to get it repaired.

Im in the same seat choosing between ikan and tote vision.

Ikan
Brightness: 400cd/m2
Contrast ratio: 200:1
Wieving angel 65/65/(R/L)

Tote vison
Brightness: 350cd/m2
Contrast ratio: 300:1
Wieving angel 65/65/55/60
Response time 22ms (rising) 35ms (falling)
Bluegun and underscan capabilitys.

The ikan is little brighter but has less contrast. I couldn't find the response time on the ikan but 22ms sounds nasty! and what is rising and falling? Does the ikan have better weiving angel since i guess you can put in 65 for the L and R??

I don't like to depened on spec but not much of a choise...

I can only say that I love my Totevision, I don´t know the Ikan, but I used the SWIT HD, the Marshall and the Pana 8" - and for the HVX the Totevision fits best in most areas IMHO...
Next step up would be the Panasonic, adding WFM and focus-in-red, but also a very bulky design...

What voltage do you use with the Tekkeon battery? How long does it last? thanks!

I was wondering what battery you're using with the Totevision. Thanks!

It runs at 7,5v. I never tested how long it lasts but its very long. You would run a few pana batteries on your cam before you run out of power on the tekkeon.

I ordered one of the panasonic battery plate from vidled and i can power the monitor with the panasonic battery as well.

I have the totevision with tekkeon batteries and I like it. I dont know any other monitor and I am sure, you can get better ones...but not for that price.

Thanks Benn and Pierre for the quick replies!

Just trying to decide to go Tekkeon or use a camera adapter plate... weighing battery life, weight and the convenience of using the same battery for the camera.

Incidentally, I spoke to the ToteVision rep at HQ; she was responsive and helpful and directed me to a regional rep.

I looked at both at NAB last year, and found the Totevision to have a better picture. The contrast on the IKAN was god-awefull. However, the underscan and blue gun did NOT work on the Totevision when viewing HD video, only on SD. So keep that in mind.
