I dont need anymore ways to spend cash, however..

I currently dont run a cart, I just use the 442/744 that I have on top of a wheel about thing. bit now that i'm getting better jobs, more feature offers etc I'm tihnking about upgrading somewhat.

the other thing is that the other day I had a crash in my much loved subaru travelling on a unit move, and am taking this as a sign to not use that car for work anymore.

So...

first thing, the car..

i'm thinking one of these

Mitsubishi_Delica_Super_Exceed_Space_Gear.jpg

which I could work from in the back and just run cables out...

so this development means that I will need

a cart
mixer
coms
boomrecorder, because why not.
video monitor
sound monitor
a comfy chair.

when I was looking at the mixer I realise I cant afford a cooper so was looking at the mackies.. and the 1620 was the one that fit best with my application. the 1220 to few preamps and the 1640 too many. this with the fw adapter should work seamlessly with boomrecorder shouldn't it?

comtek or listentech for coms, not sure if comtek do 860MHz for the uk though. I asked listentech and they say there are some coming out next month!

I might just use two flightcases for my cart, a 10u and a 6u

car £3000
FW onyx mixer £500
boomrecorder £150
cart £500
coms probably £800 for 2xTX and 5xRX

no questions but any thoughts?

If $$$ (or pounds - don't know how to do that on my keyboard) are an issue, look at the Alesis FW mixers - they work great with BR. As far as a cart goes, the rock n roller cart I got (with two add-on shelf kits) works great. You can see pictures of it in one of the lessons learned posts.

thanks phil.. what does the alesis have in the way of features? seperate phantom power is essential, the aux outputs are darned useful, talkback also a must.

this page seems a wee bit thin on the descriptions.

I had a thought about powering.. how do you power your mixer and laptop when there is no 13amp power around. the cooper takes 12-18v but not these other ones.. I was looking at the PSC power station
http://www.professionalsound.com/Catalog/pwrs.htm
which has 4pin xlr power but that doesn't help when the mackie and probably the alesis) has a 13amp hunger. and the laptop for that matter.

I actually use a rack as my "cart." I have a 10x10u rack that I have all my gear in and it works great. I actually use a 1220 with the FW that feeds into BR and haven't had any issues. I like having all my equipment (wireless receivers, etc) mounted which prompted me to use a desktop Mac stuffed into a 3U case instead of toting a laptop around. I mounted an LCD monitor to the top of the rack and have a keyboard/mouse drawer also mounted in the rack.

ifonly41nite its called a mitsubishi delica, you can get them imported from japan. they are pretty cool things, the one I was thinking of is a real real basic one.

imagine using this one

a gun turret wold definately come in useful sometimes. pesky 1stAD's, that'd showem who's got time for a wildtrack! :)

its the dream bob.. got any pics of your rig?

I will be exactly the same when I have all the gear to mount, the mac thing sounds neat and tidy.. i've seen mac mini's used like this.

You know it's funny, I actually don't have any pictures. I'll definitely need to take some as soon as I get everything put back together (I got a bigger rack, the one I had before was 10x6). The Mac minis just don't have the muscle I was looking for and they're not really upgradeable. The hardest thing was to find a rack enclosure that was shallow enough to fit into an audio rack since data center racks are much deeper. I found one that is only 15.7" deep that fits perfectly. Also, 3U is the thinnest chassis that will take full-size PCI cards standing up. It's just so easy to carry everything around in one package, all I carry along with it is a Pelican with cables, mics, Tx, etc.

i'm definately going to have to see that bob to visualise it.. could you do me a huge favour and take a pic when its together? sound just like what i want to do.

so how do you power these mains mixers when you don't have mains power to hand? i'd need to power the laptop too when there won't be mains power.

also phil, i'd have to use a seperate M-S decoder woudn't I? don't think the alesis has one? not sure if its false economy to go for one of these.

For power, I have Furman power conditioners mounted in the rack that feed everything. If I'm in a location without AC accessible, I carry around a generator and extension cords. So far the "Super Quiet" 1000 watt one from Harbor Freight (my buddy is a manager at one of the stores so I got hooked up) seems to be working fine. It has 2 120v 8A outlets work well (one to the computer/monitor, the other to everything else). The only issue I've ran into is that generators (actually most AC power in general) put out dirty, dirty power. A good conditioner works wonders to eliminate hum and also works as a voltage regulator.

My rack setup is like this:

Bottom Rack
Keyboard drawer 1U
AT R73 receivers 2U (Total of 4)
Shelf for backup recorder 2U
MOTU Midi/SMPTE interface 1U
Mac in rack chassis 3U

Upper rack
Mixer
2 Power conditioners

I have the LCD mounted to the lip of the rack up top. I fabricated all the brackets and mounts for the old one so I'm going to have to re-do just about everything for the new one. I'm trying to figure out a new way to mount the LCD to make it more convenient to put up. I'll try to post to pictures of the rack empty so you have an idea of where everything is going to go (I don't own a digital camera, just audio gear :) )

Oh yeah, almost forgot, I'm still working on the 1U chassis for my wireless antenna distribution. I also have 2 UHF HDTV antennas going into CATV amps and splitters that I was testing and got good results out of. One of my many projects is a 1U chassis to fit all the amps and splitters needed for 2 antenna inputs and 8 outputs. My step-dad ran off for a couple weeks with my brake so it's currently on hold.

i see.. a generator. are they really that quiet? I've never met a quiet one yet. certainly not one you could have on set anyway. i'll look into that. i'm not rushing this set up..

yeah the furmans are good, I remember those from my av days. can't wait to see pics of the racks.

what mixer do you use bob?

can you really have to many preamps if the board is roughly the same size? although more $$ some ppl use the yamaha 01v96. tons of routing, word clock, digital outs(and tons of features you would never use as well).

For listening, i would suggest the Icom ic r5. versatile up to 1400mhz at half the price. brand new is $200 in US.

antenna can be replaced for 15 with a smaller nub thats just as effective.

No, they're not quiet. The one I have is marketed as "Super Quiet" though. I keep the generator as far away as I can, usually still in my truck. I run extension cords to get power. So far, I've just hung sound blankets between the set and the generator but I was also thinking of making some kind of sound proofing box or something to run it in. As far as mixer, I use a Mackie 1220. I also have an older Mackie 1202 that I keep as a backup. I really like working with a cart instead of out of a bag, plus the equipment tends to be a bit cheaper to boot.

Q. what about using an inverter with a car battery, or a couple of car batteries. there wouldn't be any petrol engine to deal with, except when charging it obviously. i was thinking there could be some clever docking system in the car to hook it up with the alternator to charge it when driving. and these things are a 10th the price of a genny. The power is probably a little cleaner so could get away with a circuit breaker rather than an entire power conditioner. Just ideas at the ideas stage for discussion.

TVSound na I guess you can't have too many preamps, but I need other features on a mixer so wouldn't want to be spending the money on preamps rather than seperate phantom, mid-side matrixing and talkback. as far as I can see the alesis doesn't have any of these, and the mackie doesn't have MS either. its only the dedicated feild panel mixers as far as I can tell that does all this stuff, like the audio developments and the cooper. this is where I need PHIL to chime in to explain the alesis workflow to me. I will look into the comms and yamaha you mentioned to thanks!

There is no way I would use the R5's with all of the controls for tuning exposed like that. One nice thing about the listentechs is I can lock the tuning controls so the users can't get to to them. Most users can't even figure out how to adjust the volume, so I would not want them to have access to any other controls. :-)

Oh, and the ListenTechs are only about US$130 for the Rx's.
