Cheapest extended rec time rental in LA area?

I am not sure if I would go with two 16GB P2's/one 8GB P2 to make it two with mine or an FS-100...

I am recording 1080 interviews for DVD features, they will be talking heads, sitting down... interviewer off camera which I thought might give me a chance to switch cards so there is no shaking mid-answer...

I got the lights figured out, the sound too still working on some details though and I want to hear opinions on this subject that has already been beaten down enough times to till a litter of cats... but I need to have my own little thread so I can ask specifics and not litter other threads...

My thoughts:
_Renting one more 8GB P2
The swaps might be a bit too many

_Renting one 16GB Ps
The different capacities might get annoying, no rithm
the 16GB dump might not be done before the 8GB is full

_Renting two 18GB P2s
Less swaps, still annoying, how long will the dumps take?
Might be too much $$$?
Will have 8GB to back me up even more

_Renting one FS-100
If it fills up, I'm toast... and I'll roll non-stop most the time I think

How about recording on a laptop? You're stationary, so being tethered isn't a problem.

AWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahh

dude!!!

I OWN DV-Rack HD.. hahhah I forgot about it all together!!!

DUHHH!!!!!

hhahahah dude!!! thank you! hehhe..

I bough it a while back and I was so pissed off with Serious Magic/Adobe that I completely forgot!!! hahah!!! thanks a million!

WOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I you just found me some cash under the couch!!! hahaha

ok... so now this thread has transformed into a DVrack setup and use support for me... ok? Hoff, thanks a million! R u in the LA area? I owe u a beer!

If you get stuck, let me know, I use DV Rack.

The biggest problem with DV Rack is the activation nonsense and the fact that the server that it tries to contact to check for updates no longer exists -- Adobe pulled the plug. You can't disable the automatic update check on startup, and they didn't release a patch to remove that "feature".

yea, did you see my thread?

I have a brand new install of XP now though so there are no registry files to worry about... hopefully it will all go well this second time around

I am happy to have the vectroscope and all those features.. I forget which is the one I like... the one with the square screen that shows the exposure level from 0 to 110... that was nice to have and I was bummed when I realized it'd be a nightmare to use due to the Laptop... but for this it should be cool... nice and controlled...

Hoff I'll try to download tomorow morning and install, I'll post back here if I get stuck...

now would I have to render the footage to something else? I would be only shooting so they won't have the codec...

Actually, I just came up with a potential problem.

I saw your post in the audio section about a lav, and if you are planning on using all four audio channels, DV Rack won't work -- it only records two channels. If you aren't going to use the internal mikes, make sure that you set up your external mikes as INPUT 1 and INPUT 2.

DV Rack will record AVI or QuickTime files, but there's a bug with QuickTime recordings causing problems with files over twelve minutes or so long. If you use AVI, no problem, I have recorded that for hours.

Who is going to work with the footage, and on what platform / using what tools?

.AVI will do... great!

this prod company, mainly post... I have an editor friend there that is trying to hook me up cause he knows how bad I need it... :)

I was planning on using CH1 and CH2... and not the internals... so I will be ok... the boom is the main and the lav just for safety.

You can record directly to an external HDD via USB 2.0 right? if so I might do that since the Firewire 400 port will be take up by the feed from the camera. Otherwise I can record to the second 100GB 5400rpm internal HDD but if you know please tell me.

I've recorded to an internal 7200 RPM PATA laptop drive, an external USB2 drive, and also used an external Firewire drive with two Firewire ports in pass-through mode where the camera was plugged into the drive, and the drive into the laptop. All of these worked without a glitch.

nice bro! pass through sounds like it might have a bit more of a delay on the monitor though would it? not that it would be a problem at all, just curious

No, it doesn't add any noticeable additional delay. Technically there might be a penalty for the extra hop as the signal travels from the camera through the drive on the Firewire bus, but it would be measured in nanoseconds.

nice to know!

however I have to brak the bad news: I am getting f'ed by SoftCrap... freaking install!!!
getting a call from south Africa at 1am to try to fix it... :(
