Importing 1080i 24pa Footage into AE

I'm in the middle of editing a film I just shot and just need to do some simple fx work in AE. But I just can't figure out what the correct composition settings are for my footage is. Again I shot it all on the HVX in 1080i 24pa, working in After effects 6.5 and FCP 5.1.4.

Any help guys? I've been searching the web and have just been coming up empty handed with each pass.

Wait...I changed it from 1280x1080 to 1920x1080 and then just stretched the footage. I don't know if this is the correct way to do it, but it seems to have worked. Any other solutions?

It's all about the pixel aspect ratio. If you set up a 1280x1080 comp with a 1.5 PAR (pixel aspect ratio) then turn on the PAR correction it will display like 1920x1080. Or you can set up your comp as 1920x1080 with Square pixels and the DVCPROHD will "stretch" out.

I just went through all this when we started working in HD with the HVX...those DVCPROHD codecs are annoying like that.

Bring the footage into AE and then drag the clip onto the new composition button at the bottom of the project panel and it will create a new project with the exact resolution, aspect ratio, framerate and length of your clip. That way your comp is guaranteed to 100% match the clip.

Which is true, but without turning on the PAR correction the footage will look squashed.

I do what Arson does, then when I get back to Edius for editing, I just have to make sure that the footage has pixel aspect ratio of 1.5 under properties.

I'm not able to change the pixel aspect ratio in After effects 6.5 though. It only gives me a bunch of presets.

Ok, the above advice is right.

1. drag footage onto New Composition Button at bottom of project window, ae should interpret it correctly, you don't have to do anything to correct the pixel aspect ratio.

2. then if your footage looks squeezed you just have to click on the Toggle Pixel Aspect Ratio button in the composition window - It's on the right hand side, the rectangle box with the arrow above.

EDIT: just saw you were on 6.5, I'm on 7 pro but I assume it's the same.
