Final Cut Now Importing MXF files

Anyone else noticed that you can now import mxf files directly into Final Cut??

You have to import video and audio separately and then merge them, but hey.. It's working.. and probably just around the corner until they get smart enough to get FCP to find the audio on its own..(at least I'd hope)

p.s. there's now also a P2 Viewer for MAC actually panasonic calls it P2 Contents Manager Software (includes p2 viewer)

Im sure you are using the log and transfer window in FCP6.

It's simply a matter of choosing the entire folder (not just the mxf folder) and you get audio. When I have spanned clips also it links them perfectly.

No.. No log and transfer.. Drag and drop the mxf from finder to fcp.. Watch it import as mxf (final cut will tell u it's not optimize, but it plays fine from the timeline..) Or try file->import.. Then grab the audio MXF's then select all of them and right click and merge..

No offense, but you might want to try it befor you post.. :)

p.s. make sure you have the latest version of course, and if it doesnt work install the new Panasonic P2 Contents Manager Software for OSX, because maybe that's what made it work, but I doubt it... Then post your results.. Trust me it's working here and also verified by another user who brought it to my attention...

Just tried it - and it didn't work.
I got the dialog box: "File Error: Unknown File"

I don't have the Panasonic P2 Contents Manager Software - do you have a link?

Actually it does appear to be the CMS software that enables this... If you don't have it installed it won't work.

None taken as I did it numerous times today and it WORKED.

All I do is use the log and transfer window. Choose my folder location - select the entire folder I want then drag all my clips into the drag media here. FCP conforms them all, that takes a little time.

All my clips then appear in my project pane and are ready for editing without messing with audio.

The log and transfer window lets you preview all clips so if there is something you dont want to bring it just deselect it.

Your original post was "anyone else notice you can "IMPORT" mxf files. SO I responded to that, I didnt realise you were specifically talking about the "FILE/IMPORT" function.

Anyway my workflow WORKS and I have tried it many, many, many times :)

What he's saying is that there's a NEW capability previously lacking in FCP - the ability to import (and apparently place in a timeline for editing) MXF files directly - without needing the entire P2 structure and without transcoding to quicktime. Which is also just a few steps away from (or perhaps even makes possible?) editing directly from P2 cards...

yes it's lacking... but.. since you can import both mxf video and audio... it's a tiny step for them (their programmers) to take.. and we have fulll mxf import without wrappers... a HUGE step forward... It's right there. Full mxf support should be soon.. or... or FCP developers are dumb.... maybe as dumb as the judge that didn't give pastrana a 100 for the doulble back flip last year in the x-games.....

Nope they are just super busy with a million other things to work on in FCP. Let's remember the HVX is not the only camera in the universe. They are good folks so my suggestion is encouragement not complaints that this is something we want.

Ps- the reason why this works is the P2CMS installer places a file called MXFImporter.component into Macintosh HD>Library>QuickTime that acts as a translator for all QuickTime applications.
