Printing A Few Stills From A Dvd Movie (non-commercial Use)

I am story boarding a short film I am directing. I would like to print a couple of still images from films I own on DVD in order to communicate more effectively with my DP. Is there an easy way I can print a still image from a DVD movie (which I already own) for non-commerical purposes only? I don't care if the resolution isn't that great. I only have iMovie and don't have FCP but figured people on this post would know the answer to my question. Again, this is only for non-commericial purposes.

you can try this.

- import the large VOD file* in the DVD folder into FCP. It will not be playable in real time and it will give you a sea of red on the timeline render bar but you should be able to click through the timeline to find the frame you want.
- Then use "shift"+"n" to take a snap shot of the frame

*there are usually 2 or 3 large files in here and one of them will be the feature film.

encryption could make this more difficult in which case you should do the following:-
- download "handbrake" which is a dvd ripping tool.
- isolate the chapters you need frames from(no point ripping the whole dvd if you only need a frame grab from one chapter)
- use handbrake to rip your dvd chapters at your desired quality.(you wont need audio either)
- Once you have this file you can think of several ways to get the frame. Either into fcp again - or a screen grab etc.

I guess there is an even easier way but I am just getting outta bed and if I think of it I will add that later.

Cheers,

David

You can also import the large VOB file into MPEG Streamclip.......

It's a DVD extraction utility that's useful (and free). When you go to Export QuickTime, the Movie -> Still option will let you kick out jpeg's, pict's, whatever.

The easiest way would be to watch the DVD in window mode - as in not full screen. Get to the image you want and use preview to grab the it.

Open preview then file-grab-selection. Takes 2 seconds. Gather them in one place and print. Or just print after you made your selection.

I just grabbed this from the 480 trailer as an example.

Many computer-based DVD applications have an in-built screen capture feature... CyberLink's PowerDVD, for instance.

Thanks. Earlier I tried the "grab it" utility but in full screen mode. I'll try it again but this time not in full screen mode and see if it works. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Grab it did not seem to work on my Mac. I discovered another way. I downloaded the free VLC media player and it has a built in snapshot tool which did the trick!
