Best video noise reduction plugin for FCP?

Long story short, I have a short film shot with the HVX and some +3 gain shots underexposed. I need to light up the scene in post, but the noise is terrible. Any suggestion for a very good noise reduction software/plugin? I need it for 2 shots...SOmething that doesn't affect much edge sharpness.

That's pretty tricky- you can do this a little in Color or in Shake. There was once a plugin called Grain Surgery you could search for but it's been out for a while. In general I recommend never ever using gain. If that happens often- carry an onboard light for emergencies. If it gets too dark it's ultimately not worth shooting.

Thanks, Noah. Will try going trough Shake. Don't have color, since I'm still on FCP 5.1.4. I have Magic Bullet Colorista. Can this help?

Maybe- grain is not going to just disappear though.

Tried to do some masking, Lighting up specific areas of the frame that really need more exposure, and tried to apply the magic bullet soft portrait effect. Looks better, but lost some definition and added a "Dreamy" glow. That's a big no for this scene... I want a more realistic look. Will try to tune the "soft portrait" parameters to see if this can be saved...

I'm starting to accept that the shot will have to lose definition for the grain removal....

I would like to do a grab for you guys to check out and give some suggestions...

How do you do a frame grab in FCP?

Also a reshoot is one option- or you just live with grain. It's not the end of the world, if folks are into the story they'll deal.

Noah, unfortunatelly, reshooting is impossible, since the actor just moved to Canada :)

Anyway, its just two 2 second shots that look quite bad...They are there to establish a scene, but don't have a big continuity problem (they are shots that appear at the opening, connected by opening credits). Things might work out with some work. Thanks for the advice!

Hi there, maybe this might be of some help.

I know you asked for help for FCP but I have heard very positive things about a noise reduction plugin called Neat Video (www.neatvideo.com ).

The catch is - it's only for Adobe Premiere, After Effects, VirtualDub and Sony Vegas... but if you're desperate...

I have a FCP plugin from Joe's Filters which reduces noise, but it leaves everything a little soft, so that's not much use to you.

Another thing worth considering is your monitor. I always find that awful looking noise on my 23" Dell tends to be greatly reduced once it's compressed, burned to a DVD and played through my widescreen Sony TV. Depends on how you plan to distribute your movie at the end of the day.

To answer another question you posed - To do a frame grab, by which I presume you mean a still -

File - Export - Using QuickTime Conversion -

Then in the Save window go down to Format and choose "Still Image" then save it to wherever suits you.

Thanks for the info... But I plan to have an HD master of it, and, frankly, in a 50" Plasma, the shot as it is with 3 way color correction looks horrible. Maybe my skills are not up to par, but I'll see what I can do with colorista or Shake...

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll post some results later, and probably a grab from the original file for some help?
