HMP100, what exactly IS the purpose???

on friday, my rental house loaned me a new panasonic HPM100 to evaluate. i cant see what exactly it does that would justify its 12,000 price tag???

from what i can see there is little to nothing that it does that a $700 laptop wont...

can anyone here shed some light on some features im not seeing?

It does an awful lot that a laptop won't; it's a realtime upconversion/downconversion/cross-conversion system with HD-SDI input and output and RS-422 control. It's meant to be a bridge product between the analog world, the tape world, and the P2 world.

As strictly an editor, no, it's no big deal. It's more of a hardware box bridge product.
