Urgent: Need to send 3GB by tomorrow

Hi guys, I'm kind of frustrated right now.

I've been making a short commercial here the last few days, it's 20 seconds, I think. It's going to be used as a commercial in the cinemas, and it's my responsibility to get the film sent over for them to convert it into whatever they play it as. Anyways, they want it in 1080P uncompressed quicktime, which makes it 3GB, and that's only a small part of the frustration.

I need to have it sent over by tomorrow, in order to keep away from trouble here. They promised to contact me about lending me FTP-space so that I could upload, but they haven't. I've tried calling them, even tried getting in touch my my kind-of contact person for them. He isn't answering either. Seems like I'm on my own.

What I have is the file on my hard-drive, a pretty slow internet connection, the email-adress to send it to, and 200MB of FTP space.

What I need is FTP space, or some other really smart way to send the footage. No, I can't send it physically to them, it's too far away and in a too short notice. So I need suggestions, and I need them now!

I can set you up with an FTP account on Isara. But when you say "slow connection" what do you mean? How long would it take for you to upload 3gb?

The problem is, if they are suppose to send you FTP information then it's probably because they want you to upload the file to their local servers. Which means ,if you upload to another site (and not theirs) then they will have to download the 3gb file which will take a lot of time. Not sure.

Edit: FTP info sent via PM.

If you have a slow connection, you're betting off burning it to DVD, stuffing it in an envelope and sending it FedEx. It will get there sooner...At the very least zip the file as you may be able to reduce the files size by at least a third.

You may also want to try setting up your own computer as an FTP server, that way they download straight off your hard drive and you don't have to waste time uploading and downloading from an external server. If you are on a mac this is super easy, you just stick it in your sites folder, activate web sharing in system preferences and give them a link with your IP address/~username/filename. And here is a download time calculator.

If you need to find out your maximum upload speed, go here--

Try this too.

www.send6.com

you upload the file, and put in their email address, and it emails them a link to download it.
I've used it a few times and it works pretty damn good. I've sent full quality SD .mov's before.

3 gigs on a slow connection is going to take a long time and if something times out, you are screwed. I would use something like winrar and chop up the video into a bunch of 200 meg files and either use that site they linked or try to send through a chat program like AIM or MSN. Chopping it up will allow you to only have to resend the chunk that may time out instead of the whole thing. Then on their side they get winrar and re-assemble the files. Its real easy.

Burn it to a DVD and mail it.
Oh and if you still want to upload it to somewhere, PM me and ill hook you up.

Whoa.... i just realised MiniMan and Miniman13 are two different people........

Seriosuly, Overnight FEDEX. Pay the 60$, send it. If they want it that bad, they will have soemone wait at the office. and they should know better than to ask for a Uncompressed 1080p "by tommorwo" via FTP. thats asking for trouble. Also, in the meantime, while sorting it out, compress a H246 with a REALLY high bitrate, and small FTP them a 300meg H264. it should look pretty awesome, and in a pinch they can use that, and rerender it to uncompressed.

No i just change my name and avatar alot :-P
JK! - Yea i sent my similarly named friend an ftp that he can upload too if he needs it.

Firewire drive and fed-ex... period.

Its larger than a single DVD... that means two parts.
They will screw up which order they go in

If you compress, they need the codec.
They won't have it.

If you split it with some coder/decoder to fit on multiple discs...
They will screw it up.

Send em a drive.. overnight. If it has to be faster, there are courier services that
stick it on a plane and have someone else waiting on the other end.

Fed Ex, is the standard.

Ya i was thinking the same, why would you fed ex a harddrive for 3gb of footage? DVD = 4.7gb or 8-ish gb's for dual layer.

I was here first! :)

But anyways... Just found out that winrar can do wonders, 3GB down to just above 700MB, made the problem so much smaller. Let's just cross our fingers and hope for this to work...

And a big thank you to my fellow DVXusers! :)
