FCP 6 fully compatible with PAL HVX 202EN?

hey guys,
I'm about to Go and get my self a Macbook pro 15" duo core 2 and FCP 6.

I own a HVX 202EN (pal) and I'm really getting the mbp so I can edit 720p and 1080i on it with FCP 6 on the run with the camera etc etc.

SO the big question is, does FCP 6 support the recording formats on the pal camera?

Does it support from the HVX202en:
1080i/50i
1080i/25p (really need to know if it supports this)
720p/50p
720p/25p
720p/25pn (again really need to know if it supports this and variable frame rates within this setting.)

I've gone thru the forums and I cant find any exact details on the resolutions and frame rates FCP 6 supports on the PAL hvx.. (and the apple site doesnt really give me exact details on whether it supports 1080i/25p or 720p variable frame rates in pal land)

If someone could tell me if yes/no it does support the above frame rates I'd be in ur debt. My descision to buy a MBP will be dependent on ur response. So I really need an answer.

Thanks in advance!

1080i/50i YES
1080i/25p (really need to know if it supports this) NO
720p/50p ??????
720p/25p YES
720p/25pn (again really need to know if it supports this and variable frame rates within this setting.) Pretty sure no - I know theres some workarounds - sorry I havent kept fully abreast of all PAL stuff - I need to as I am back in PAL land next year, with an HPX by the looks of things

Someone more qualified to answer will come along soon and fill my gaps.

hey, thanks for the reply!

No 1080i/25p on FCP 6? Damn. Double Damn. I was under the impression that if u wanted an NLE with complete HVX compatibilty FCP was the one to pick. Is there any NLE on pc or mac that fully supports 1080i/25p?

Can anyone else confirm if shooting and then editing in 720p PAL with variable frame rates is actually possible with FCP 6?

Again a response or confirmation would be mucho appreciated!

Ok, well I'll have to look into that. Beauty about the new intel macs is that they can dual boot windows as well.

Any idea when Apple is planning on adding 1080i/25p support?
again, is 720p pal with multiple frame rates supported on FCP 6?

Also, barry your bootcamp dvd is just ace. Helped me with my camera.. alot!.

Are you sure ???? I was under the impression that FCP can handle variable framerates at 720 25p !!!!! So FCP is a "no go for PAL land" if you want to use all the possibilies of the HVX ????

I said FCP does support 720/25p. But as I said someone more qualified - using PAL for these purposes regularly needs to confirm.

EDIT: I cant confirm 720/50p.

1080/25p is absolutely fine. 720/25pn VFR is fine. 720/50p is a no go, tho'...

In fact, I don't think it will let you edit anything in a 50 fps timebase.

So if I record at 50 fps in 720/25p mode it is fine ?
Why is it so difficult for Apple to add 720/50p ?????

1080/25p is absolutely fine. 720/25pn VFR is fine. 720/50p is a no go, tho'...

So wait, 1080i/25p IS POSSIBLE? Are you sure? Where in the settings for this?

Btw, Got my macbook pro (ex-demo, saved me 800$)

FCP 6.01 is now installed

And here are my results:

-720/25pn works great with VFR .

-720/25p works fine but I can't seem to get VFR from it. 25p only. Is there some conversion thingy or setting I have to tweak to get VFR?

-1080i/50i is listed in the options and I assume it works. I don't really have any interest in shooting in interlaced but its good to know its there.

So now the big question is 1080i/25p!

Does 1080i/25p definately work on FCP 6 from the HVX 202 EN?

Im getting conflicting responses, some say yes and some say no.

For ppl saying yes, If you could please post a detailed description of how to setup this setting within project so I can get proper progressive 25 frames in 1080, that would be ace.

For all the help so far, I thank everyone. Your all champions.

now i am even more confused, what is difference between 25p and 25pn?
I know UIS version has 24pa/30pa and 24pn/30pn.
I thought there was only one 25p mode in the"PAL"version (aside from VFR)

On the PAL HVX in 720p theres 25p, 25pn & 50p.

From my understanding (thanks to barrys bootcamp dvd) in 25p the camera still stores all 50 frames. same with 50p. 25pn only stores 25 frames (or whatever VFR ur recording at) no extra frames are recorded like in 25p. Thats the short and quick explanation.. I think.

Theres more info on this all over the forums. barrys done some explanations himself that would serve u better than mine. Forum search.

Anyway back to the topic of achieving 1080i/25p from the HVX on FCP (for new comers read my previous post)..

[EDIT: jigga420 beat me to answering the 25p/25pn query... but here's my response anyway :P ]

720/25p and 720/50p are 'over 50' modes. That is, no matter what VFR you're set at it will always record 50 frames per second.

So if you're at a VFR of 50 fps it will record 50 distinct frames per second. If you're at a VFR of 25 fps it will still record 50 frames per second, but every second one will be a duplicate. So you've only got 25 distinct frames all duplicated.

In 720/25pn mode (the n stands for native) only the required frames are recorded. So if you're at a VFR of 25 fps, it will only record those 25 frames. This saves space on the P2 card.

I haven't tried VFR in either of the 'over 50' modes, but in the native mode VFR works absolutely fine. Jigga420, there is a feature under one of the menus in FCP6 called the DVCProHD Frame Rate Converter or something... you may have to use this to get VFR from 720/25p mode...

As far as 1080/25p goes, all I did was drag the clip into a new sequence and accepted the settings it applied (FCP6 will ask to change the sequence settings to match the settings of the first clip you drop into the sequence). I didn't analyze it in depth, but everything seemed to look fine... 1080 sized image, playing at 25 fps... but perhaps I missed something. I don't have access to my mac at the moment but will check it out tomorrow.

Ok I understood this already all is embedded in the 50i stream of the codec, pn (native) with only the frames needed and p with doublication of each frame. xoposho.

After some experimentation, the method I described above seems to work fine.

Log and Transfer media.
Create new sequence.
Drag 1080i/25p clip into sequence.
Click "Yes" to change sequence settings to match the clip settings.

Simple as that. As far as I can tell, this produces 25 full progressive frames per second.

If you want to set up a sequence yourself the settings are as follows:

Frame Size: 1440x1080 Aspect Ratio: HD (1440x1080) (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1440x1080)
Anamorphic 16:9 unchecked
Field Dominance: None
Editing Timebase: 25
QuickTime Video Settings:
Compressor: DVCPRO HD 1080p25
Quality: 100

Hope this helps!

From what I read, 1080 25p is officially called "25p over 50i", so it means that the full progressive frame is stored over two fields. So there should be a dominance issue as those fields are not exactly the same (one is made from the odd lines, the other is made from the even lines). Question is: which field is first?

IMHO it shouldn´t matter which field is first since they were recorded at the same time, so no jigsaw pictures...
I always shoot 1080p and edit in the DVCproHD 1080 50i preset (not sure if I check "no fields" or whatever the option is called...)

So your telling me to get proper 25p out of the 1080i stream (as in if u've shot 1080i/25p on the pal hvx), all you have to do is bring in the footage at 1080i/50i in FCP and then select "no fields" in the sequence preset?

Wouldn't that just mean that the footage is converted into 50i when its brought in at 1080i/50i and then just de-interlaced with the "no fields" setting?
If thats what happening thats not really getting the proper 25p from the 1080i stream, its just de-interlacing 50i footage....

Correct me if I'm wrong, please.
