Buy BBG and Softie for Oktava or Blimp for Rode NTG?

Hey guys,

I've been using my oktava with the sound-room windscreen for indoors and my rode ntg1 with deadcat for outdoors. Now it's time to do some upgrading and I wanted some opinions on what the better investment would be: BBG and softie for oktava or Blimp for ntg1--with my limited budget, I was thinking this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130139664789&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=003

I shoot indoor/outdoor interchangeably, not one more than the other, but I would think that I'd need all the outdoor protection I can afford, since I can't control or temper nature, while I can more or less control things indoor. So what gives me better sound outdoors? Outfitted Oktava or Rode?

Thanks, guys.

depends on how loud your environment is, and how wide the shot is. the typical hollywood feature approach is usually to stick with the hyper/super cardioid (in features, usually the schoeps cmc641) until either the background is too loud or the frame is too wide to give good dialogue/background separation. Then typically switch out to a shotgun (either a cs-3e, schoeps cmit5u or perhaps an mkh60/70/816) and wireless lavs.

but obviously if you shoot eng/reality/other stuff, you cant always control the volume levels of the environments you shoot in.

how are you finding the deadcat to work for you? do you ever think "man, i need more?" - if you dont often think that, then get the bbg and have your hyper ready for booming tricky outdoor scenes where background noise isnt too high. if you DO often think that, then the blimp is probably better.

keep in mind that you can also get a barrel extender for the oktava that will make it longer - allowing you to use both mics in a blimp.

I agree with Tim! Great post!

The BBG with jammer does work great outside in wind, but it sounds like you may need a zepplin and an xlr barrel extender for your oktava. I figure you want to be able to use your shotgun outside right? Also the zepplin is a good investment since you can keep using it when you upgrade shotguns later (note the same is true for the 20mm BBG works with the schoeps, oktava, blueline and uls).

Hello guys,

I have often wished for more protection with the deadcat, so it looks like a blimp would offer the best of both worlds--provided I purchase that barrel extender for the oktava (I had no idea they had these! Thanks, man!).

Once again, thanks for the help guys!

I would like to point out the the BBG is very light and easy to handle. I would still try to get one for that reason alone once you have the budget.
