Tom Marshall
Actor!!!!!!
That's the way I see it, if they really WANT to be in your movie. They'll be as good as their director. I've got nothing against theater actors, I am one. I think the most important element in narrative films is the acting. The actor comes first in my book. But acting for the camera and stage acting are so fundamentally different that it's very difficult to make the transition from one form to the other even with experienced top rate direction.
I'd rather deal with someone who has no idea about acting than someone who has a lot of bad ideas about acting or even good theater habits that have to be broken.
I see what you're saying. I think I originally read it wrong. I agree that you're better off getting an unexperienced actor than a stage actor. I've done theatre before and, although it can be a huge rush, I actually prefer film acting. It's much more intimate. I was actually having this discussion with a girl the other day who loves stage acting...
Another thing is when you're casting, especially actors that have very few film credits - especially here in Los Angeles. We cast for a short I did for Horrorfest and after several of them read for the part, the first thing that came to my mind was, "theatre actor." Sometimes I'd ask them if they'd done a lot of theatre and not much film acting. They were sometimes embarrased to admit that was the case, believe it or not.
