Rihanna Umbrellas - proof that music has nothing to do with music any more

it was danny elfman's brother making "forbidden zone" that led to him doing his first film score. I forget his brother's name, who never went on to really do much else, but it launched Elfman.

It's strange, because a lot of the "pop" music in the 80s were made by talented musicians... take The Police for example. They were pop, but talented too. Sting has had a great career as has Stewart Copeland. But pop music these days just seems that it's not really made by talented people. It's all a formula. Sure, 80s music was a little cheesy at times, but a lot of it was really cool too...

The Police were musicians music that still holds it's own today. They were popular but they weren't pop. A lot of pop that came after copied them. A ton of 80's music has that same reggae sound.

There's a lot of crap out there, sure, but anytime you open the doors to more people, you get more crap. Look at the films out there now that cheap filmmaking has reached the masses - I would argue that it's probably gotten *harder* to get noticed as a filmmaker since the digital revolution simply BECAUSE the market is filled with so much crap.

An ocean of crap isn't necessarily a bad thing. Yeah, makes it harder to get noticed, but if you do...

...you only have to be about 7% better to be thought of as a genius. :)

In the meantime, I just bought 2 CD sets of Motown singles from 1959 - 1992, so I'm ok for a while, listening-wise.

A shame that most kids these days wouldn't understand a line like "Just like Pagliacci did I try to keep my sadness hid" ("Who's Pallyachi?")

What are you talking about?

What are you talking about?

That is a crazy track, as in hot. Basic is what they were going for. In this case you either know or you don't know. Rihanna's unbrella is fire and you just don't get it.

Whats wrong with a pretty girl selling sexy and taking endorsments. She never said that she was in it for the just the love of music alone. Some people in the real world like to make money. If you made a movie, and some company came to you and said heres 2 million dollars to let us put your movies name on a product they manufacture , I guess you would say no. I understand how alot of people can be annoyed by alot of the rap music thats rammed down our ear canals lately, but this track is not one of them. This track is all about the drive and swag. Music is not about numbers all the time. Sometimes its about the feeling you get from a driving beat around 1:30am in the club. HipHop and rap are 2 different things. And if you don't know that then you should be cautious about judging it. This track had its own legs. And if you knew anything about the music industry today you wouldn't blame any artist for taking endorsments. Don't get me wrong, there are alot of music entertainers who do fit your bill, but she does have talent, and has proven herself by releasing some earlier projects that faired well. She's no Beyouce', but give her a break. She can hold a note, and looks good doing it.:)

As if it wasn't enough that we have to listen to the severely undertalented nasal "vocalist" Rihanna hiss out that uninspired drivel of a song on every single radio and TV station in the world (undoubtedly due to her poorly disguised sexual references like "Come into me" and her being pretty much nekkid in the video) we are now expected to all stand under her umbrellas - LITERALLY. In true hip-hop fashion Rihanna has now released her own line of umbrellas for all her sheep... ehm... I mean fans to stand under.

The umbrellas by the way look exactly like any other umbrellas - no hot nekkid chicks or anything to get into - just a big RIHANNA spelled out prominently on the side. Really worth shelling out $25 plus shipping for isn't it:

*not interested in standing under anyone else's umbrella*

OK, Tell me something please.

OK, Tell me something please.

just to make sure this threead is killed by trigger happy mods:

Ah, you ignorant fool! the borders of music are not being expanded but contracted. popular music today is so narrow Paris Hilton has a hard time fitting through. the music industry has NOTHING to do with music and everything to do with money. as an example: Warner canned ALL bands that didn't sell more than.... what was it... 30,000 albums last year, even if they didn't actually produce an album that year. as a result they canned a huge pile of bands that in the 80s and 90s kept the label going. probably the most stupid decision ever made because cutting the roster resulted in massive decline in sales.

And just so you know, no major label will now sign you unless you can GUARANTEE at least 100,000 albums sold in the first year. they won't even listen to your demo!

trust me. I know what I'm talking about (though I can't cite my sources)

I understand what your trying to say, but you are slightly misguided. You using 2nd hand info and thats just wrong.

How does an artist guarantee a label that they can sell 100,000 units. Tell me how Rihanna guaranteed Def Jam that she could sell 100,000 units the first year. Did she hold a board meeting and showed Jay-Z pie charts and graphs that made Def Jam executives feel this is a guaranteed shot. The only way an artist is going to guarrantee a record company that he or she can sell 100,000 units is by selling 100,000 units before they ever walk into the labels office. And believe you me, if an artist can sell over 100,000 units on his or her own they won't have to go to any record label. The label will come to them. And expectations for that artist is going to be alot more than 100,000 units. You were on the right track when you said that the industry was about the money more so than the artist. But in fairness people have been feeling that way for a very long time. The big picture is this. With the internet the music industry has suffered greatly, but not just in the way that you may think though. The industry still makes alot of money from sales, but in comparing sales of today to the late 80's, crazy 90's , and very early 2000's they don't make as much. To compentsate they expand there money making possibilities to any and everything under the sun. Today you have artist endorsing products years before they even release an album. So who suffers. The audience. So what happens to the so called lucky entertainers like Rihanna who lucks up and gets signed and is able to build up a good enough following to score a hit like Umbrella. Rather than chance it she says OWE YAH!!! Yes I will sign my name on your umbrella fella. Just pay me.

And again for the record Umbrella is a nice cut with a simple, but wicked drive.
