Can DPs make home movies?

I hate that I have to struggle and decide what camera I want to bring out just to shoot a leisurely day out with the family. Do I bring out the big camera and the Brevis35 or do I take the little Sony handycam? I always get both ready and at the last minute grab the big cam thinking its more opportunities to get something for the reel. Today I'm going to bite the bullet and grab the Sony because its hot as hell out but I know something great is going to happen and I'm not going to have the right camera. :P

Sometimes being a DP can be a hindrance on everyday life.

Yeah.... here is my own violin.

It's especially bad when you're talking to your three year old. "That was great honey. Put the leaves back down and move to your left. We're going to go for another take."

i take my DVX out. leave the HVX home and grab my Go35. :) small light easy to handle, and good enuff for home movies.

ha! This reminds me of that commercial with Martin Scorsese where he goes and picks up the pictures he took of a birthday party or whatever it was... he'd say "God, that's awful!" or "What was I thinking?" or "The composition on that shot is terrible!"

whos going to do the audio though? :) Not that I call myself a DP but having access to big time equipment makes life hard. Lately I've been toughing it out and taking the HVX to big family stuff, but my little sony mini dv still comes with me on a lot of adventures and as the weather is heating up it will be coming out more. I've found that I have yet to wish I had shot in HD or with a better camera as the content is usually so fantastic I couldve shot it on a cellphone.

Greatest. Commercial. Ever.

Well I wish I had the bigger camera and a good mic because the little girl we took on the Wonder Wheel Screamed the whole ride at the top of her lungs. I made them go on the cars that ride on the track. Its going to be a great youtube video I bet. :)

Oh man, never saw that commercial before. The look after the clerk says "it's pretty" is priceless.

Thanks for the link!
