Short film scheduling and planning nightmare

Well, I have done several short films now and I've realized that planning is the single thing you can't do enough of.

Basically my problem and question is about planning scenes for a shoot. I think I am making the process much harder than it needs to be.

I've divided up the sum 35 scenes by location, then by day or night, then by who is in it (because of availability of the actors on certain days)

Are there programs that you guys use that help in the scheduling/scene arranging process or is it just as quick by hand? I can't imagine doing a feature using my current method. I am visual so I was think of putting the scenes on notecards and that way I could shuffle them around.

I'm trying to be as efficient as possible, instead of my old frame of mind that after just arriving on the set would say, "Now what scene should we do first?"

Thanks.

there was a program i used in the 90's called "movie magic -scheduling." it was great because you only had to enter info once. then you could print out schedules, prop breakdowns, auto breakdowns.. it was great.

having said that, i was trained to do it the 'old fashioned way'

this is what a movie schedule looks like.

hell, try using ms excel. simple, free if you got a PC. i've seen way more complicated things done with that and you can make it look better which equals an easier read....

I'd go with what that guy said. Not sure if Celtix does scheduling and all. But it's a grand free program that helps tonnes in pre-production.
