Can this be done in FCP or is it more of a stunt?

i want to make someone appear as if they are levitating. can this be done in FCP or will i have to figure a way to rig something together???

Use a locked off camera for the shot. Make sure the lighting will be consistent throughout. Film it with the person on some kind of solid and evenly colored object (black, green, or blue likely the best bets). Then film the shot again with no object or actor in it. Then you can use a difference key (or a bit of matting and/or cropping) to isolate the actor and have them levitate all you like.

cheers.

okay i think i get the jest of it but as far as having the actor separated from the scene, but what tool would be used in FCP to make them actually move up into the air in that static shot? is it something i would have to do frame by frame or something?

sorry if i'm missing the mark. sounds pretty easy but it's not clicking to me yet.

key it out using the difference key, or color key, and then just use a keyframe and use the Center + button and move them up (its in the Motion tab)

If you're levitating off a surface and the person is wearing anything that comes in contact with that surface you'll have to rig a wire setup.

The clothing will interact -- sag, drape, etc -- and if it doesn't it'll look very odd.

Also the person will cast a shadow onto that surface and, unless it's a perfectly flat surface, the shadow will have to conform to the irregularities in that surface, too.

Really depends on the shot but rig and wire removal are quite easily done these days- all you need is something like Shake for example.
