Hi People. Has anyone ever tried this. If not, i think/would love to do this. I would like to get every amature, professional, enthusuist i know/on this forum involved in an open source feature film. EG we all come up with a story, help film. (if requires help with special effects) and editing.

Would any of you be interested in this. We would have to somehow hire the proper equipment for all this.

Cheers,
Nathaniel

While the idea is interesting - how would you deal with shooting?
I mean, the actors would all have to be in the same place.

Unless of course you shot the entire movie in 1 shots and the actors were shot against green screen and then composited....

:)

Yeah, it's been tried a few times and never seems to pan out.

Google it and I think you'll come up with a few.

I mean do this propely. Im sure some of us know some good actors. It might only be open to the people in the Uk, unless people can travel to the UK.

Thanks,

We tried that a few years ago but it was hard to keep every together and the story straight. There were a ton of changes and rewrites and rewrites. Every team had about 18 minutes for their segment and it was about the end of the world and everyone had 3 days left. I think we started with over 20 teams from different states and in Canada and it dropped down to 9. One guy was the executive producer and tried his best to keep all the teams together but it just died out. We almost finished our segment and i think some teams finished but it still died. We worked on it for about a year and a half I think.

I've seen many efforts to do this before. It never really works.

...and IF it worked out, it probably wouldn't be a collaboration of the whole site at all. Maybe just one guy shoots, one scores, and someone else does a special effect.

End of the world does seem to be a good topic for this. That way there should be different locations and actors, etc.

Open source movies

Open source movies

"Elephants Dream" was made with open source software. Is this what you were thinking of? The Internet Archive has some interesting "open source" movies, but it actually just looks like GPL'ed movies more than anything else.

Maybe "Nothing So Strange" is what you were thinking of? This as well as Elephants Dream appears on Wikipedia's list.

They seem like interesting projects. What makes them open? The sources of their footage? Do they distribute the files (such as the images from 3DS Max)? Do they allow open source collaboration re: the script?

Neat stuff.

I think the best way to make a collaborative feature is to have a similar theme and combine short films. It allows for creative freedom rather than being locked down to a specific look or style.

There's a film with a bunch of shorts film from famous directors called Paris Je T'aime (or something like that).

A few years back, I tought it would be a cool idea to do a doc about this site, and the people you use it. All who wanted could contribute, and put in thier thoughts on the post side. But it did not drum up enough interest.
