Why aren't the JVC GY-HD110 and JVC GY-HD200 popular?

I don't know if Final Cut has been able to capture its 24P mode yet - I was helping a lady work on a documentary and she went out and shot it in 24P, comes back and can't capture it because FCP doesn't support that mode. Don't know if that's been fixed.

It's a nice camera and I know a few people with them, they're all pretty happy with their purchase, but no one's been flat-out "holy crap! this thing is amazing!" I think it's probably a bit too ENG for people that are looking for camcorders, and for people who are looking for ENG, there's other, better options than HDV. That's my guess, but who knows.

people say the "JVC" name isn't any good, but IME, it was a solid camera and I liked its focus assistant, but just never seemed to be targeted to the right market.

JVC has a hill to climb. When they came out with that first HD cam it was ho-hum... and prior to that I think JVC has a shiddy reputation. So really they can't even just come out with something competitive within a category... they really need to come up with a category killer... like Panasonic did in the original DVX.

As you should be hearing more and more... there are lots of Panasonic fans that are giving Canon a go because of the recent Canon entries to HD. Canon had it easy because the original XL1, and XL1s were very well received... that was the "it" camera for a long time... then the DVX came along and put the XL2 in an odd place... but all Canon had to do is get back to business on the original design... then incorporate Panasonic's advances.

Then of course there's the Sony wild card. All things being equal I never would have left the Sony camp... if the DVX didn't do anything different then a PD-170 then I'd have got the PD-170... Panasonic was smart enough to know this.

So JVC is pretty cool in having the time code, etc. But they are stuck with one of two options at this point... either wow us with a cam sporting unprecedented features at an unprecedented price... or else earn fans back through years of marketing and barely leading in a few areas of either features OR price.
