I think I'm screwed

A project I've been working on for months in vegas 6 is corrupt. The file will not open, I have hours and hours worth of editing... what do I do? Is there a way I can open an earlier saved of the project?

Yes I made a back-up, but the back-up is the same exact file, just on another disc drive.

Vegas opens fine, it's when I try to open this particular project I get the error. Yesterday I put in about 8hrs worth of editing, but today when I try to open the file I'm getting the corrupt message... I hope I don't have to reedit, here's a screen grap of the error message.

David, by .veg.bak I assume you mean the back-up file right? I tried opening it, and the same error appears. Because the back-up file is just a saved copy of the other file, you know sorta like saving 2 documents with the same name in different places.

Try opening it through File>Open instead of double-clicking it.

Whenever I've discovered a corrupted .veg file, the .veg.bak file always came through for me.

Hope it works out for you. Sometimes I hand backup my project files in 3 different places, and sometimes I change the name of the file such as

Johnson Birthday 7 17 07

So eventually I have a large list of backups from different dates in multiple locations in case one of them goes corrupt, hard drive failure, etc. Hope you get it back

Ok. I'll try that, thanks. But I fear I've lost this project for good:crybaby:

I did this on my last film, but never had a corrupted file, so I decided not to do it on this project and there ya go.. figures...

I guess lesson learned.. the hard way...

Looks more like an application error than a save file error. Delete your page file, uninstall vegas, scrub registry, reboot, reinstall and execute. I bet that'll fix it.

I got one of those too... scared the crap out of me and couldn't figure out what to do.. only lost a few hours on a project I cut a thousand different ways so I kept going but since then I back up to an SD card... also always save large amounts of work by saving a new version... I have a folder for each project in which I always have a "Vegas Project" folder in which I have versions named as 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on... that way corrupted files kill only the last tweaks... I love being able to have my project in my phone's card cause all I need is the External HDD with all footage (my backup) and I can travel with it but I only dare to use that copy cause I also have two internal copies of footage... oh, and I save every nanosecond....

back on topic, it sounds like the un-install and re-install would work if it were a Vegas file that got corrupted, but I edited on that instal after the error came up.... then again I have no clue if the number was the same and there are many files that make up Vegas... anywho.... I hope you get it working!!!

please post with development when you get back on schedule with the edit, I am very interested

Another thing you might want to try after you go through the reinstall is playing each one of your project clips in Windows Media Player. If it pukes or even slightly glitches on any one of the avis, move it to a different folder before you start Vegas. Vegas will look for it and tell it to ignore the file.

Vegas might be hitching on a corrupted AVI and wmp can be pretty sensitive with bad avis. You might be out that clip, but it's better than starting from scratch.

Good luck.

No luck, I tried everything.. I uninstalled and reinstalled but the file is still corrupt, I did that file paging thingy and the file would not open, it read a different error message "not having enough memory" so I put the paging file back to it's default...

I tried everything I could think of accept for scrubbing the Registry, I'm not that good with computers so I'm afraid I might screw up the Operating System.

I have no other choice but to start from scratch, now I have to try and put back my Vegas how it was, excuse me why I go crawl up in the corner and

Lesson learned, always save a new version of your file after some edits, especially if it's a feature film you're working on...

That's why I made the "Save VEG" tool in Excalibur as a replacement for the "Save" button on the toolbar. It saves the project in three places - two of which contain a date/time stamp giving you many different backup versions.

You still never said if you tried opening the filename.veg.bak file.

If you click "Start" then Search and type in the file it will appear. Make sure in the search bar you type *.bak

ohh... they are right in my Projects folder... I allways wondered what they were but felt stoopid about asking... lol

good to know... thanks guys

I'm probalby the least experienced member of this group... but there's one thing I haven't seen suggested and maybe it would be a waste of time --- but if that happened to me, I might put the questionable file(s) on an external HD, then go to a friend's house and d/l the trial version of Vegas to his PC, and try to open the file. If it didn't open at that point, I'd have confirmation that the file is corrupt. If it did open, then I'd know there was some *anomoly* between my pc and the file, and at least feel some relief that the file is still usable - then look deeper into the problem with the pc.

Capital P, I had something similar like this happen a while back. Here is what my problem was, maybe it will work for you. For some reason it seems that the newer versions of Quicktime, pretty much everything after 7.01, does not seem to get along with my installation of vegas on my desktop or my PC. I did not notice this unitil I recieved a quicktime file from one of our editors and placed it on my timeline in a project I was working on. Everything seemed fine until I closed the project and the next day tried to open it. I kept getting error messages that Vegas would now close. . etc. I finally figured out that unistalling quicktime and installing an older version, 7.0.1 worked for me, that the error went away.

Now this may or may not work for you, don't go unistalling quicktime unless you know you have a quicktime file on your timeline, it does not effect vegas unless there is one there.

Good luck.

lilewis... very good suggestion... a must do before scratching, then again by now he probably has a whole new and better cut going...

I had this type of thing happened when I had a new computer built for me after my other one gave up the ghost. No matter what I did, I could not get the project to open. Come to find out, since I was using an external plug in in the project (Heroglyph), I had to make sure the plug in was installed on the new system BEFORE trying to open the veg file. That fixed it. Do you have any external plug ins on the timeline that are not currently installed on your current computer? If so, install the plug in and you might get lucky!

Hope this helps.
