My first ever lightwave render attempt...

Well I asked a month or so ago about good lightwave training and I bought 3d garage from Dan Alban (great teacher). I just popped in the DVDs last week I've never used a 3d program before the closest thing I have used to 3d is AE. I do have a background in video/film so I think they may have helped the learning curve but thus far Lightwave is SWEET! I plan on buying Cinema 4d (awesome ae integration I hear) for my house but I have lightwave at work oh well .

These are a few grabs of a model I’m working on. I built it from scratch and textured it although I did follow the tutorial but still it put a smile on my face after I rendered the first few frames! I'm sure this is really really basic for most but it gave me some hope I could do some decent 3d effects/models in the future.

Very well done for a first attempt, keep at it. Your going to get hooked soon :)

The only tip I can give is always have an eye for scale, for example try using real world values when ever possible.

Ya know your modelling is fine. It's lighting that's key here.
And to a lesser extent DOF (Depth of field) when it is apllicable to the shot, which you have done well here.
Your second shot could be made to look like a million bucks, if you add more subtle little lights and lose your master light.

Bring out more shadows/contrasts.
Soften your lighting on the box itself. The edges are too hard/abrupt.
Look at it. The lum is constant over the entire front and top of the box.
Maybe some colored lighting? Lights, lights, lights.

triplej96 - thanks for getting the course!

You're doing great. The image and lighting look very nice. Keep at it!

Wow not bad at all for a first attempt! I've seen more and more Lightwave, 3D Max users pick up the program and just go with it. However I've been learning Maya (about a full year), and can't even get a render that nice. This program is so complex, it's really a program that requires lessons or college. I'm thinking about switching

Nice job!!

Good job triplej. Great work for your first attempt. I agree with the above comments already posted. I'd add that the texture of the wood needs some bump mapping for added reality. I'm sure most shipping crates aren't made from good-one-side stock.:)

You may see some post opinions that Lightwave is a "dying product", which I don't agree. It may be a bit outdated but there have been some great improvements and add-ons in the last couple years. It's used regularly in TV, feature-films, and commercials, and I don't see it going away.

Keep up the good work!

I'm glad you got "the bug" TripleJ. 3D can be lots of fun (and sometimes frustrating). I think you're off to a great start and I look forward to seeing more!

Pretty cool to see Dan respond as well. I've got more of his books than I could probably carry at one time. If he drives a fancy sports car, I probably helped pay for it  Seriously, his books helped me greatly in learning how to create in lightwave.

Thanks everyone for the comments! 3d is awesome I've always wanted to learn it now I am. I agree with everyone comments. Sorry didn't comment until now I've been in Florida for vacation! Back to work tomorrow...

Glad to see all the great 3d dvxers leave a few comments! You guys were part of my inspiration to get started. Also great to see Dan comment he has great tutorials!
