"On The Lot" tonight

If the dude wants 10 actors, the comp casts and brings em in? That's what I got. So right off the bat that's that. Next the cameramen. Or how many?Or is it just the "director".

Next the audio. I'd bet it's the same deal. It is not done in 24hr but as a post "what do you want" by some hired, trained, help.

Compression for web display? Yep, only the best baby.

So....Maybe that's good because they are put in a "pro" position and see what they can do.

That's true. Half the work of getting a film done involved getting together the equipment, crew, actors etc. and a ton of logistical works. It's my dream to one day show up on set and just start shooting without worrying about any of the above. All these guys on the show in a sense are all in the best positions they'll ever be in their film career, because for once they're being given unlimited resources to do what they love.

So, this week was really strong I thought (or maybe I just like Action movies) hehe

Anyway, I voted for Jason (my fave of the competition) who did not disappoint!

I also thought Mateen was really good this week!

I think that dude who made the skateboard movie ought to be booted, no doubt.

i wish they would have let kenny do his own stunt...then I would have laughed out loud if he busted his ass on the pavement. I thought he was going to cry because they would not let him play with his toy.

Jason was the best this week....and I would imagine that him and Zack should be considered the 2 front runners...with sam not very far behind.

that's if this show even makes it to the finals..........

what?! you mean you didn't like when he cut to the laughing lizard in the middle of his skateboard racing scene? i bet you didn't like the godfather II either!

i noticed he used some of the same wacky sound effects (the laughing sound) from his crazy cab short. i think i'm gonna have nightmares about that tonight.

i think everybody stepped it up, jason is my favorite, but the guy that did the short about the car salesman and the fbi chase needs to go now. mateen did good but i predicted that one all the way through which aint really a bad thing since it was well done.

the guy adam who had the first short did pretty good too.

these guys have a pretty nice sized crew of professionals (stunt men, makeup, VFX, SFX, DP's, editor's, etc) so theres no need any of it should LOOK weak.

the guy that did the short about the car salesman and the fbi chase needs to go now.

I thought that was pretty funny, except for the blatant product placement.

And Kenny truly scraped the bottom of the cinematic barrel tonight. There was not a single inventive thing about his film. The jokes are seriously Disney channel original movie quality. The whole "I know physics and therefore can skate like a pro" thing was stretched beyond suspension of disbelief. Something creative should have been done with that, but it's throw away in a one liner. Sad.

for all you cinematographers - does kenny really have beautiful images like carrie keeps saying??? looked petty average to me. especially when he was doing it himself in the beginning.

My dream:
One day people people will be as polite to each other on the internet as they would be if they were at a dinner party or out for cocktails or in the break room at work.

I know it's a little out there. But hey it's a dream.

Hey, shut up... "Jack". :kali:

edit -- smiley face error. should have been a :).

This week Jason's was a homerun for the most part, IMHO.

My ranking this week:
1) Jason's (the anniversary one)

2) Key Witness -(the all action cuffed together one)

much better than:

3) Mateen's - cop chase / Kenny's - skateboard one (tie - don't feel strong enough about either to pick one over the other)

5) the ford comercial one ( not funny and another FORD commercial)

What's the deal with this blatant Ford stuff? Do you get a budget incentive if you center your short around ford? If you are stuck for an idea does Ford have some writers to help you? Something is fishy here. Maybe it's just that IF you happen to have cars or cellphones in your short they have to be Verizon, or Ford. That wouldn't be too creepy to me, but anything beyond that that in a competition is kind of disconcerting.

...

VIEWING SUGGESTION
There have been a couple of times on the show where I've felt watching the behind the scenes pieces they do before seeing the short gave me to much information / bias going in ...

... So I've been fast forwarding and watching all the shorts first, then going back and watching the BTS afterwards.

I don't want to know what the filmmaker was going for or what they were struggling with before I see the film. For example, I didn't feel I could evaluate the western Donkey Eared one last week based on the merits of the film itself because what she was going for was explained so much and previewed so much in the BTS piece.

I much preferred seeing each short fresh this week and being surprised and having a better sense of where the story telling was actually clear or not because I didn't know anything about each film going in.

His past work was more visually arresting than this week. Both of his films before the Zombie one - the cab one, and the waterfall suicide one - had a very distinct look.

The waterfall one, while more a music video than anything else, was pretty incredibly shot.

But this week what the hell was with that lower thirds vignette????

I did like his use of the wide angle lens, especially on the bad guys during the actual race.

And I really liked the way the stop sign shot was framed.

so the last two women got the boot tonight. i'm not really surprised, but it's kinda crazy to think none of them even made the final 8.

jason was good again. it looks like it's going to come down to him and zack.

i'm not sure why carrie likes andrew so much. he likes to add comedy to everything, but his films just aren't that funny. to me it seems like his idea of comedic timing isn't that great and his punchlines are too weak.

more of kenny's "wacky" sound effects...imagine being the sound guy and having to add that crap.

she likes him and zack. pretty much anything with a disney feel to it whether it's funny or not.

Jason's film was really good. admit that I knocked him earlier and giving him props now. I like his work and Will's. I feel that Zach may have peaked too early.

I think one thing this show really suffers from is not being transparent about the rules, process, etc. I wonder how much these film makers are taking advantage of feedback at each stage (to their credit) vs benefiting from having staff writers, directors of photography, pro stunt men, etc. Just can't help feeling skepticism which detracts from my overall experience.

but hey, at least Adrianna had decent wardrobe this week for the first time.

If you have it on Tivo or DVR, look at Fisher's face when Adriana walks in front of her in the opening monologue. Looks like maybe Fisher hadn't seen her yet and she just shakes her head in disbelief at Adrianna's generel Adrianna-ness.

lol, she must feel a certain way about adrienna because it seems like the judges kinda crack on her subtly every now and then...

maybe with Arianna, Fox was going for the Paula Abdul element. That wouldn't be the only thing they had lifted from the American Idol formula.

My intuition is that I really wish they had given Mark Burnett more latitude to produce the show. Lord knows he can craft a better vehicle for indie film.

Jason's short "Sweet" was the best by a mile. Superb direction and timing. Really tight editing.

Zero2Sixty's comedic aspect felt forced. The acting of the FBI agent was over the top goofy and unrealistic. Do FBI agents give foot chases of what looks like a petty criminal.

Kenny's "Losers" felt like a Disney after-school special. There was nothing remotely entertaining or edgy about it.

The rest felt like retreads of old beaten up cliches. And enough of the smashing into windshields scenes, as if this hasn't been done a billion times in Hollywood. Most real life accidents between a vehicle and a pedestrian usually has the pedestrian being run over.

"Oh hi. remember me? I'm the little thread known as "On the Lot tonight". We haven't seen each other in a while.

In the beginning of the summer, you kept me on page one of the Cafe with your constant comments & critiques. But these days, I'm more likely to be found around page 9 of the Cafe. How things have changed.

We've been through a lot together. A slew of guest hosts, Kenny's departure and who could forget all of Adriana's various outfits? We even had a spinoff thread ("On the Lot, July 24th)

Well, hope all is well. One thing is for sure. I'm not watching the show anymore either. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Sincerely,
"On the Lot" tonight, the thread."

lol, you're a funny dude.

i'm still watching the show but dont comment anymore becuse i figured everybody else stopped watching it. last week's shorts werent all that great. they all are kind of using old ideas they've already used like for instance zack did a sequel to his last short and the other guy did another musical and got carrie all hot and steamy over it. i think she wanted to take him home after that.
