Do you know that for a fact?
It can cost a lot to fix the audio in post and I'm sure it cost quite a bit to fix Mariachi, El But at least it can be fixed.

Considering the costs to fix it, a Schoeps shotgun seems like a bargain though

A Schoeps shot gun is a little different than using a Radio Shack Microphone attached to a tape recorder. If you use a boommic that cost $500, Paramount is not going to have to pay a Mil to fix audio. That is for damn sure. If they did, none us would buy any of these $500-$1,000 boo mics. We'd be forced to spend 20,000 on a boom mic, that is if there any that even cost that much.

I was thinking they had to ADR the entire Mariachi soundtrack to get it to theater standard. So I went to the bookshelf and pulled Rodriguez book.
Here's a quote:

I'm here in the transfer room and they have all the DAT machines and 35mm mag stock recorders and patch cables sticking out everywhere and here i have my little Marantz tape recorder patched into the 35mm mag recorder making my transfers. The guys working here ask me, "What are you doing? Is that the sound for the temp soundtrack?"

"No," I told them, This is for my final soundtrack. This Marantz and a Radio Shack mic is what I recorded my dialogue, sound effects, and music with". They all laugh at me.

He made fades between songs by scraping the magnetic sound track into the shape of an arrow!

Ah, but Oleg you are forgetting the very cute PA that they have assigned to sound. That make the $200 stretch farther.....

The exact post audio figure is never told, just like the budget estimate is often fudged to keep it higher or lower for publicity sake. Like the elusive Blair Witch budget that no one could ever nail down.

Regardless, the whole soundtrack was ADR. Any soundtrack CAN be ADR'ed beginning to end, including a silent film. The question is do you want to. Record it with a radio shack mic and you will be forced to. Your budget, you time; figure out the movie from beginning to end. Saving a minute and a buck during production that cost you 3 hours and $1000 in post is not a wise business decision.

Be sure that Paramount (or whoever) will never see your film if it has a soundtrack like El Marichi's original soundtrack. Guys like Rodriguez and Kevin Smith made it during a unique time in cinema history. That time has past, you can't mail a VHS tape of your film to a studio in hopes it will get viewed. The explosion of DV/low budget filmmaking has made that impossible.

If you don’t have a publicly viewable film your movie will never see the light of day and audio is the number one disqualifier for film festivals.

Cheers

Shoot me if I have to stoop to that level. Sundance accepts films with rough cut audio every year. But they don't take films that suck with bad audio.
