Conducting Street Interviews: Shotgun vs Boom?

Hey guys,

I've looked around the forums for similar sittuations but haven't been able to find an answer. I'm shooting a commercial and a segment of it requires that we interview random people in the city. Which do you feel would be best for a sittuation like this? Shotgun mic or boom? Or perhaps go with a wireless? What would be the pros and cons of each one? My gut tells me to go with the boom but I was wanting some feedback.

Many thanks,
Cyrus

Boom mic is any mic mounted on boom; could be shotgun hyper, long gun, etc. Long or short shotguns tend to be the best for ENG street interviews. Wiring up strangers with lavs tends to be too time consuming and for some reason some people just freak out when strangers try to touch them to put lav mic on. :)

Cheers

Thank you very much guys. I just rented a me66. However, I am having trouble mounting it onto the camera. This is the first time I've used one before. Can anybody explain the process of getting the mic attached to the DVX? Sory if this sounds newbish but I am new to this.

Thanks
Cyrus

Alright, got the mic mounted :)

However when I talk into it I can tell it's only picking up on Channel 1. I put on some headphones and the audio was only coming in through the left ear. How can I set it up so that the mic works with both channels? Thanks again!

Plug it into channel 2 and then hit the switch on the left side of the camera that will route audio from channel 2 over to channel one as well.

By the way, the ME66 is known to be a lame mic, AND, you probably won't get good sound if the mic is on the camera. You should put it (the mic) on the end of a boom pole and put it right over thier head, out of frame, pointing at theor mouth---- or put it at sternum level pointing up their mouth from just below frame.

I suppose you could get good audio with the mic on the camera if you stuck the lens 10" in front of thier face. But seriously, good audio is all about getting that mic right up their pudgy F-ing chops. Jam it in! Yeah!

Shotgun mikes, with a few exceptions, are mono. You can duplicate the audio channel in post and even add some stereo separation, or you can have the camera record the single output on both channels 1 and 2. My preference is handling it in post and adding stereo separation.

Just came back from street inteview session, Rode NTG-1 with deadcat on-camera as backup, Sanken CS-3e in Rycote Zeppelin/Windjammer held by the journalist. Both routed via SD302.
