Music Rights for Festivals

Hi.

A film I made was accepted to a small festival in Tennessee. I produced it using music off an internet site for "personal usage" - and up to this point that is all it's been. I'm wondering if I now need to expand the usage (and fees to the music company). I will not be receiving revenue from the festival, but I believe they charge people to watch the films...What is the norm for this? It was a pretty low budget production (under 10 grand) and the music for personal use was nominal - but for broadcast is something in the order of $5-600/song x 3 =

Do people normally pay for music rights for festivals, or wait till it gets picked up for broadcast?

In US they absolutely have to have festival licensing for copyrighted material. Israeli law might be different. Consulting a lawyer is the only 100% safe way to proceed.

Cheers

You need to contact the music company and ask for a quote for festival rights. Explain your budget, how often you use the music in the film, and they will let you know. Often it is around $250 per song. If the artist and recordist are two different people/organizations you have to pay them the same amount separately.
