"On The Lot" tonight

I think it's some kind of marketing stunt by Ford (an On the Lot Sponsor)
http://www.fordvehicles.com/boredomhurts/index.asp
They guy is part of some viral marketing campaign for them.

EDIT: He's an actor playing character, namely: a filmmaker who's working for Ford in a contest to give away Ford Escapes to people that send them videos of going to outrageous lengths to "escape" boredom.

Don't click around on the above link to much ... it will make you feel dirty.

Beat me to it.

is anyone else annoyed by this? i guess any company with enough money can get their "director" listed with the other contestants. sad.

I just don't like that you click through a few things before you know you are participating in a marketing campaign.

If they ran something like this on the contestant page, so you knew it was an add, then it would be OK I think.

i've been hearing rumors that the contestants have professional writers helping them as part of the "hollywood crew" i hope that is just a rumor. i'm still looking for the link to the thread on another website of the person who said that.

Wellp, they all did better than I could've done! And Eli Roth should remain a judge... he's the only one that gave any kind of REAL criticism each and every time.

I said to myself "This looks like a commercial..." and sure enough, Eli Roth says "It felt more like a GOT MILK commercial." And he broke down why in just a few words.

If this show had better Judges, I might actually tune in more often. Carrie is weak and afraid to give any real criticism to make these guys and gals better at what they wanna do.

Actually Carrie was pretty harsh on one of those films (was it the tree one?) She didn't use words like "useless" or "stupid" but the meaning was there.

This last episode was much better than prior episodes. Nothing helps "The Lot" more than the ability to fast-forward though. I can't imagine trying to sit through that show live, without the DVR...

The only thing I heard her saying was "Well... and... yeah and I just liked it so kudos to you.". She never actually went into any minor detail about why it worked for her. But, if you're saying it was one of the better episodes, I'm happy to have watched that one. It wasn't bad.

An example with Eli Roth was "There were too many perspectives. There was the cop, then there was the main character, then there was the moon...". He just pointed out things that weren't exactly on the level instead of faltering around his words.

And yeah... I fast-forwarded most of the content. LoL

i woulda thought eli roth could relate to the cop short beating up the guy to a pulp being as Hostel 1 and 2 take it a notch further and just torture innocent people for 2 hours, lol.

he made good points though and he was clear. if only all the judges could convey a level of competency as he did. he obviously knew what he was talking about.

it's sad about the show on a whole though because i used to just fast forward the commercials and now i fast forward past the host and just watch the shorts and listen to the feedback they get. everything else is useless......

"Tonight, six directors try to scare you silly with their brand new films. Using top-notch crews, professional actors and writers, killer locations, and mad special effects..."
i read this on another website and they say this is what the host says before the opening of the show or last show. i never watch that because i'm always fast forwarding it.

so these guys have help from hollywood writers now?

also i think it comes on MONDAY night instead of Tuesday this week due to the game coming on Tuesday. Great way to lose the handful of viewers left that are watching the show.

nice...writers. that piece the show did on the making of Shalini's short, "First Sight" made her look a lot like just an AD on the film. although the short did seem to express her spirit.

but I have to wonder how the studio is negotiating standards and practices issues about the amount/quality of assistance that they are giving to the different directors. while a lot of reality is scripted, it seems like you'd be walking a potentially very thin line to have writers work with contestants in a gameshow that contains a $1 mill development deal as a final prize.

so as not to assume the worst, maybe everybody has the same writer (or group of writers) help them, or maybe the feedback is given in front of all the contestants in a single group session. if these are one-on-one sit downs between the contestants and different writers, it would seem troublesome to me in such a competition of such a subjective nature.

John's 2 cents (for what it's worth):

I am hoping Will wins. He is quite clever and his work has been consistently very good.

could not stand Eli Roth as a judge. So smug, his comments frequently off base.

thought "Worldly Possessions" was the best short film from last night.

what the hell was that potato sack Adrianna Costa was wearing and why is her wardrobe almost always distractingly bad?

she's getting consistent with the ugly dresses....i really wish carrie was not on the show. i'm not surprised she thought "Donkey-Tail Willy" was the best short film of the night. It reflects her taste in movies.

Some decent short this week. First Sight was kinda out there for me on a couple of spots (what was that monk supposed to symbolized?) but the shot of her looking at herself in the mirror was a nice emotional punch, well executed.

But what is up with the general comedy tone? I think 4 out of 5 films were comedies (or wanna be comedy). Can't these guys do anything else?

Comedy lends its self the most to a short format. The whole punchline thing works better. Its hard to convey full character depth in a matter of minutes.

Not saying that people shouldn't try to do other things but when given a short amount of time to make a short more often than not people fall back on comedy.
