Hi kids

Hey,, help me out here,,,
if I get this mic system,, EW112PG2 ,, which is simple lav and transmitter for video cam,,, would I be able to pick additional lavs and bodypacks in the future and run them off the same transmitter ???

nope 1 transmitter per lav mic can feed 1 or more receivers. not sure what you mean by additional bodypacks - bodypacks are just the style of transmitters and receivers.

Well I meant bodypacks as in the transmiter units
So essentially what I'm asking is if I get this kit consisting of one reciever, one mic, one transmitter,,, am I able tto later expand the kit with additional mics

each mic needs its own transmitter which needs its own receiver so no you'll need additional transmitters and receivers to go with the additional mics.

What jda said. Also, if you get the G2 setup, be sure to budget for a replacement mic. The stock lav (ME2 or ME4) that comes with the G2 is terrible. Minimum replacement would be the Countryman EMW. Search for lavaliere threads to see what other higher-end replacements are also recommended.

thank you both,,

that is what I figured but needed to make sure
OK,,, that said please recomend a system that would allow for at least two lavs where the reciever is easily attached to the cam for dolly roll or steadycam

You can do that with the G2's, but you need two pairs - 2 Tx's and 2 Rx's. There is one company out there making a dual receiver (i.e. 2 Tx's to 1 Rx), but I think it is Azden and their products are generally crap.

To do it with the two pairs of G2's, just hang both Rx's off the camera (one can go in the hot shoe mount, the other can hang off the hand strap, or just velcro both to the body of the camera.

what camera do you have? Most (if not all) wireless lav systems are mono and will only occupy one channel, and most cameras have at least 2 mono inputs or 1 stereo input (that could be split to two mono xlr's with a beachtek box), so you just hang two receivers off of the camera. There are a variety of brackets that accomplish this. The only dual system I know of (and theres alot I dont know) is the azden with one receiver, two transmitters, and two mics, but I dont hear anything that great about it. If you are on a budget and need two wireless systems you cant beat 2 g2's. Phil is dead on about replacing the mics - the stock ones will work but the sound is muddy and just plain old bad. We use them for corporate training/presidential address types of videos and the audio always drives me insane, but its the client's equipment and they are very happy with it so I nod my head. We made a big step when we talked them into not using the on camera mics so maybe eventually we can talk them into something a bit more professional sounding.

I'm shooting on DVX100B, atpresent am making due with ATR55 shotgun
which, although is a real poor mans mic, is an improvement over the cam mic when set to super.

thank you also ,,, pardon my dumb'ness but what are the G2s, if they are budget then they are for me, and how do I select a decent mic to replace the crappy stock mic

g2's are what you originally were looking at - ew112Pg2. There are a few variations of kits but as long as you have a transmitter and a receiver you are set. There's also the 500 series but it has few advantages and a higher price tag. The 100 series (that you are looking at) is regarded as the lowest acceptable wireless kit. Next steps up would probably be lectro or zaxcom and those are pricey but more reliable and better sound quality.

Countryman EMW, B6, B3, Sanken Cos-11 are all great mics DPA and Sennheiser also make great models and there are a few im forgetting for sure. (like the Tram TR50 I just remembered) The EMW is the cheapest though - 149 at Northern light and sound for an xlr wired version. All of these mics can be wired for g2 (or lectro, or zaxcom). Each wireless system has its own style of connector - the g2's use a 3.5mm mini locking plug similiar to what you find on a pair of stereo headphones but with a handy screw lock collar.

Only other thing I would look into if you are using these alot are energizer rechargable nimh's and the 15 minute fast charger. Got mine at lowes and love it. Get as many 2500mah batteries as you can and have a blast! The g2's usually give us a days worth power before giving up. Each receiver and transmitter take 2 AA's a piece so that can add up fast.

Well !! you both have given me a great "fast n dirty" thank you both for taking the time, it means a great deal to me I hope one day to do the same for someone else.

I've pasted your post to a note so I can google up all these models you've just mentioned, thnx.... BTW I saw a post by you that mentioned future projects in the way of Documentariy and the like ,, take a moment and PM me as I am looking forward to doing Documentaries and would love to collaborate with you. That is if you care to do so, I don't want to impose, I just feel it would be good is all...

i've found that the Sanken COS-11 sounds best with the G2 system... it's a great all-around lav and certainly a major improvement over the Sennheiser ME2. higher end lav mics like the DPA 4061 or Sennheiser MKE Platinum i don't find to sound noticeably better because the G2 audio components are not exactly audiophile quality. however, they're quite good for the price and you can still get decent sound out of em.
