Royalty Free music like Glass or Nyman

Can anyone recommend a site or even specific pieces that sound like Philip Glass or Michael Nyman? I prefer a royalty free piece.

I've searched through the usual suspects but am not having much luck.

I would do a search for some local music students who are into "new music". They are constantly reinventing Glass like pieces. I'm sure you could get the rights to something for free, there is virtually no money in "new music" so exposure means a lot.

Royalty free...

Hi, I came across this posting as I am just starting to get interested in filmmaking myself - amateur though. I am actually working with Opuzz royalty free music library http://www.opuzz.com/

I don't know if we have anything ala Philip Glass or Michael Nyman (seeing that I know not much about music since I am in business development!) but you can definately check us out. What I know for a fact is that we have plenty of excellent film style tracks - see http://www.opuzz.com/royalty-free-music-cds-filmstyle.asp and of course a lot more.

What I would like to stress about our library is that Opuzz is an independent library which means all our music is written in-house unlike most libraries that have the same music circulating by the same pool of contributing composers. This likens our library to needledrop libraries where music is more exclusive (due to the reason that you have to pay more) yet without the high fees. Ours is a simple pay once, your to use forever terms so it is great for the film itself, the trailer, web version and etc without any additional fees. Our rates are very reasonable starting at $2.99 and we have mulitiple edit versions available consistently for all our music. You have the option of immediate music downloads, music CD or our hard drive system.

By the way we are having a promo sale now. Do check us out at http://www.opuzz.com. An alternative to getting it done custom I guess.

Thanks for the suggestion. I need only 30 seconds and need it fairly quickly for a project. This is a great option if I had a bit more lead time.

Thanks, but this is exactly the reason I've posted this question. I've spent countless hours browsing various libraries without success and am looking for some specific guidance.

Well then you probably need to be more specific. Glass for instance has written quite a few pieces that vary in style a lot. You could do the one with the bird trapped in a room from scratch probably with out too much problem. I think though that you are probably talking about the very loopy sequencer stuff that has been used in a number of films. I think you might have some luck for that looking for Trance, ambient tracks. Not my style at all but I think Digital Juice has some of that for BG transitions etc. For 30 sec you could also fake it in something like Garageband or Acid.

The shot we're doing is a single dolly down a long room - very similar in pacing to the Peter Greenaway films. The client likes the motion and the Nyman sound.

Glass stuff like the tracks from The Photographer or Solo Piano will work.

I know all three are very different, but all can be suited to our purpose due to the repetitive nature of the compositions.

I use shockwave-sound.com. Their prices are reasonable, and you get full comping versions of most of their music so you can try it out before you buy it.

Thanks. I've used them before, but their selection is limited and they don't have anything stylistically similar to what I'm looking for... at least I didn't find anything in their inventory.

Did you look at Digital juice? I think some of there transitions might work. I would also look at some "trance" and "ambient" MIDI files. This stuff is very synthesized and you may find more tracks as MIDI files than as actual recordings.

Have you considered using Sonicfire Pro from Smartsound?

This is different than traditional royalty free in that you can dictate that a piece of music is any length of time, and it will "rewrite" itself to finish perfectly.

You can also change moods and manually adjust the volume of individual instruments.

I have used this on a couple of projects and found it to be absolutely invaluable. It has saved me a ton of time on background music.

You can check it out here:
