help me with this cool idea, REMOTE EDITING

Hey guys, so I work a ton of projects with remote agency guys. How cool would it be if I could show them the playback from the NLE in realtime as I edit and scrub?

How can this be done?

My thoughts are:

1 a webcam setup looking at my 24inch screen
2 some software that would take the video overlay and push it out via the internet to be watched as you would a webcam on the other end

Downsides to both:

1 webcams will look really crappy if they are looking at a computer screen, not good for client
2 software would be awesome, but would have to know what portion of the screen to "capture" and send. it would also have to use the CPU I guess to compress, this may get in the way of Premiere playback of the timeline.

what do you guys thing? How can I do it?

It's a cool idea for sure!
I'd say that you (and them too) would need some badass bandwidth to do it - both with a decent video stream and live voice both ways, it'll suck up a fair bit I'd guess :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

IMO the best bet would be to probably go down the webcam track (maybe using a separate PC so as not to hinder your editing system) - if they want to see things in any more detail than that, you can always quickly email them a clip notes pdf of the timeline portion to review. that'll only take a minute to do :)

you could use remote desktop, and edit on thier computer. A very fast connection would help with that.

you cannot even edit over a local wireless network, so I don't know how a remote desktop would work over the internet

I thought I could put my gazzillion hard drives out of out of eyesight and connect to them over a wireless router and edit on my laptop anywhere in my apartment taking all my hard drives with me (wirelessly) no way Jose. Toooo slow.

For this remote idea I would point webcam at the monitor - that would be for shot selection and cutting only - it will look like crap, and then post full res stills for them to get an idea of color correction etc. when relevant

But even that is problematic, because unless you go over and calibrate their monitors before hand, no telling what kind of feedback you are gonna get back and what it's based on.

What about Go2myPC? They say that you basically just use your desktop pc over an internet connected pc or laptop! I've never actually used it, but I hear the ads for it all the time on Sirius Radio. I think it basically just broadcasts the visual info from your homebased pc and all the processing would be taken care of by your home pc, not the internet connected laptop/pc... has anyone else tried or used this?

Go2MyPC is pretty much the same as remote desktop. As soon as you bring up the first frame of a video, its going to have to be drawn out... until the connections get a lot faster. I have done some very basic editing over remote desktop. This was for simple chops, encoding, and uploading a clip to the web (from work, hehe). Hitting "play" was pretty much useless. It really helps to make your preview windows as small as possible.

The web cam trick would allow for more fluid motion, but you lose a ton of detail and would have lag. You're monitor might run at 1920x1200, but do the webcams go above 320x240? Maybe 640x480 tops? And that is very crappy compression.

So I think it depends on if you want motion detail or resolution/color detail.

I had the same idea.. and had the same problems.. slow wireless killed it. I was going to try and use FREENAS, set up a network attached 1tb raid so that I could edit from it wirelessly... a no go. I will probably go with one of those "toaster" looking boxes with a couple of 500gb hds in them.

I also have converted my old XBOX into a XBMC (XBox Media Center) to show my movies and play music. It works great, but sometimes even that relatively low bandwidth requirement chokes. My wife gets so pissed when we get halfway into an episode of "24" and it starts stuttering and pausing... and there I go, running down to burn it to DVD so I can bring it up to my Xbox in the living room... wireless sucks!!!

Does the XBox offer wireless...?
Anyway, maybe there´s a way to grab the signal from the video card to the monitor, run this into another workstation as a videofeed for livestreaming, maybe a Digital Rapids system?
It is a pricey solution, depends on your projects if it´ll pay off...

Yeah.. you buy an xbox wireless adapter,.. works like a charm. I don't need to, because I put my wireless router (linksys) right behind my TV, where it goes into my cable modem. The XBMC is hard wired into the router, but the rest of my network is wireless.. hence the slow lagtime on viewing movies sometimes.

I can't rave enough about how cool I think the XBMC is (super easy to install and rivals/beats any other media center I have seen)... just cost me $70 from craigslist for a used xbox to hack, and about an hour of time to set it up. Its cool.

Just google xbmc or check out this link. http://www.xboxmediacenter.com

Sorry, didn't mean to derail this convo....

Actually I got a cracked Xbox three years ago, but I never got it to play movie files (only the old arcade games that came with the hack...)
Haven´t used it since then but now I´ll give it another try;o)
