Hello Everyone.

I'm one of those "long time readers" and finally's posting..woo hoo!
well, I am interested in doing a video project where I would take tons of still photography but give them movement and thus the video would be of the stills. I have seen it done but I don't know how they do it. (its like that black and white french film that "12 monkeys" was based on)

What I mean by movement is that it looks like you are actually taking the picture and doing pans, zooms, etc but its obvious its not actual camera work but some kind of digital software doing this. I, however, have no clue what software is used to do this and i have been having a hard time finding referenc to it when i do a search on google. any ideas anyone?

thanks in advance

Ken Burns effect! This can be accomplished in a variety of NLE's just by importing pictures and using scale and position keyframes. Microsoft also has some software that will do this too, just dont remember the name.

Animating stills can be done with a lot of different apps. NLE's: Avid, FCP, Premiere, iMovie, etc. There's also more sophisticated compositing apps such as After Effects, Combustion, Motion and others.

Ken Burns didn't invent the technique but because he used it so often in his documentaries the effect has become synonymous with his name - "the Ken Burns Effect".

Google "Ken Burns Effect" and you'll find a ton of resources.

Very nice! thanks guys. So I just bought my MacBook and haven't yet made the investment into Final Cut, but basically in the meantime I should be able to do this in Imovie then? Will I be able to mix the still with actual video using only Imovie?

What about Imaginate? I think it's a Canopus product and from what I've heard you don't lose res on a picture when zooming about (maybe res is the wrong word but you get the drift).

thanks for the ideas. i'll play with what I have access to and see what I come up wtih. I'll let you all know how it turns out.
