Seagate to ship 1TB Barracuda drives
By Peter Cohen

Hard disk drive maker Seagate on Monday announced plans to ship 1 terabyte (TB) versions of its Barracuda 7200.11 and ES.2 internal hard disk drives in the third calendar quarter of 2007.

The new drives spin at 7,200 RPM and have average seek times of 8.5 milliseconds (ms), and feature up to 32MB of cache. The drives use perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) to write data on four platters inside the mechanism. The slim design helps them operate at lower temperatures and consume less power, according to Seagte.

The ES.2 is especially designed for enterprise storage needsl; the 7200.11 is aimed at desktop users. Pricing on the ES.2 was not announced, but Seagate said the 7200.11 will cost $399.99.

$10,000 per megabyte in 1956. Wow.

It's crazy that the cost of a 15gig hard drive was $150.00 in the year 2000.

It's crazy that the cost of a 15gig hard drive was $150.00 in the year 2000.

in the notes it says that the first hard drive (5 megabytes) was about the size of two refrigerators.

1 gigabyte / 5 megabytes = 200
that's the size of 400 refrigerators

1 terabyte / 1 gigabyte = 1000
400,000 refrigerators

Imagine trying to edit RED footage on a computer from the 50s.

My dad told me that the thought of ever having home computers is the 60s was laughable.
