Slow motion help (please don't hit me)

Ok, I watched Badlaa’s Footbag promo video and I was impressed with the slow motion he managed to produce. I’ve been a premiere guy for years and I was never able to use it for slow motion with good/usable results. So, here I am now giving Vegas a try to see if I can come up with some decent slow-mo. I’ve seen a lot of other good results with this software, so there’s no excuse for me not to be able to achieve good slow-mo. I’ve searched the Vegas section of the forum (browsed “slow motion”) and read a lot of David Jimerson’s advices, but I things are still not looking as good as they should. I’m going to post exactly what I’m going to see if I’m messing something up on the process:
- Went out with my Xh-A1 and captured some 50interlaced footage (shutter 1/100)
- Opened vegas 7 and went to “project properties”, on “field order” I set it to “none/progressive scan” and on “deinterlace method” I selected “interpolate fields”
- Imported the interlaced footage to the timeline
- Clicked on “control” and stretched the video on the timeline

But when I export the video I can see some sort of jitter/ghosting…I don’t know. I’m going to post an example so you guys can see what I’m talking about.

P.S – I appreciate your patience after this topic has been debated about a zillion times

set clip playback rate to 50%, anything else will frame blend. Make sure you render as progressive.

How do I do that? Is it “insert/remove envelope” and then "velocity"? Because I'm trying this and the issue persists. I've read somewhere that if the value is not exact (say 50% instead of 52%) the results won't be the same. But I'm having a bit of a hard time pulling the velocity line to an exact value. I'm sure there must be an alternative way where I can just type the value I want somewhere...

right click properties, type 0.5 in the playback rate, or right click the velocity envelope point and set to 50%, either way works and should produce smooth slomo

Thanks, it DID work!

Two more questions:
1- does it only work properly with 0.5 on the playback rate or can I go lower than that and still achieve usable results?
2- Should the values be in some way logical? I mean like 25, 50, 75, 100? Or can I introduce stuff like 27, 58, 73?

The reason 50% works is because when you record interlaced one set of lines is record 1/50 or 1/60 seconds after the other so each interlaced frame has 50% of the image at time zero and 50% 1/50 (or 1/60) of a second later. Vegas makes two new frames out of the two fields by interpolating the missing set of lines, so you lose some vertical res, but if you're going from HD to SD you prob won't see the loss in res. Any speed below 50% will introduce frame blending which may or may not be noticeable depending how much movement you have frame to frame.

You should use something like Twixtor to go slower, it morphs between frames to generate new intermediate frames, best to use 25% or a logical percentage that will insert x number of new frames in between, for smoother motion.

But Twixtor is not compatible with Vegas.........know something that does what twixtor does that DOES work with Vegas?

But if your looking for slowmo. And you dont mind twixtor. Then why worry about vegas compatibility ? You just need to slow your footage down. You could always do this (working with an uncompressed avi to avoid any generation loss) then bring your slowmo'ed footage back into the vegas timeline. Im wondering why you would want it to work "within" vegas ? If you need to CC or something then do that, render out as uncompressed. Then import back in. Most slowmo scenes are logically very short. So i hardly see a problem. Hmmm but i still long for that ultra smooth slomo which hollywood achieves with high framerate cameras. Only that method can give you crisp yet ultra slow-motion.

can you do the same thing with 60i? if so, what percentage would i have to slow it down to, after importing the footage into the 24p timeline?
