I have read on another forum that Creative Cow has started banning a good sized list of other websites it doesn't want it users to go to. I don't post on the Cow so I don't know for sure but what I have read is that any mention of certain sites including dvxuser will be automatically rejected and that some users have had their accounts terminated for mentioning it.

Anybody else heard about this?

And if they really do that what are you going to do?
Go ahead over to the cow and do that and let us know the results.
Most of these forums are ad supported, the Cow especially.
I have had posts deleted on dvinfo.net for mentioning
websites and products. dvxuser has seemed to lighten up
in this regards. It's just sites being competitive as the
ad dollars shrink up.

I heard something about that policy and I think it's ultimately not in their best interest. Most of us bounce around different sites and a link to another site is not like pulling out a plug in the bathtub--letting the users drain out. :) Then again, we have a little less of a commercial slant than a lot of other sites. We try to be fairly open about this stuff, but you have to draw a line at commercial advertising. Because if you have some people paying for ads and some people advertising for free, it tends to mess things up. But banning a bunch of links seems like it would be a never ending battle and piss off your users to boot.

On many occasions I have mentioned dvxuser on other forums when someone has specific questions about the HVX. Dvxuser is one of the best, if not THE best source of information on the HVX (IMO).

It seems inconsistent with professional behavior to try to restrict your users access to information that might solve a problem, might prevent a disaster at a shoot, etc.

I only rarely go to dvinfo anymore due to the high level of censorship. I have had a couple posts deleted. I have seen threads where posts were deleted simply because the mod and the user didn't agree on some technical issue.

I think I most be banned from dvinfo.net because when I log in they have revoked my privileges. I can't search or post. I emailed them at least 5 times and no response so guess where I don't go anymore. Every time someone asks me about a good video site to find out info about new camcorders I send them to dvxuser always. You have been a very good community to me. Thanks all.

Back to the topic Creative Cow has to redesign their forum it is to hard to tell when a thread has been updated cause they don't go to the top. dvxuser don't change anything!

holy cow, there are other sites where i can get information on digital video?! see you chumps later!!!

yeah... pretty retarded. I block some people and companies for just being assholes, but to ban an entire group of sites to try and shelter yourself from the competition, never, ever, wins.\\

kind of like we didn't win the cold war with USSR by assassinating people (though that helped a lot)

we won it mostly by making a country that everyone wanted to move to (although Canada seems like a better choice more and more, health care, low number of violent deaths, etc. - don't get me started)

(a cold war expert was on the Colbert Report last night - hence the reference)

make a good forum where people can get ALL the info they need and they will want to come there, and they will tell others to visit as well.

Case in point - I've recently joined Stu (magic bullet inventor/orphanage founder/VFX for Sin City)Maschwitz's
Rebel's Guide
a spin of forum of his great book:
"The DV Rebel's Guide:
An All-Digital Approach to Making Killer Action Movies on the Cheap"
To be horribly reductionist, the book/forum are focused on how to cheat a shot in post to look like there are lot of, say, ninjas in it when you only had one guy, there's also lots of focus on after effects and especially on color correction, what the DV Rebel might carry in his/her camera bag, how to do things cheap, etc. - just giving you an idea how it's different from DVXuser.

Anyway ... someone at Rebel's Guide suggested that Stu should do a film fest like DVXuser and he said:

"It's a cool idea guys, but one thing to consider is that this list will never be as big as, say, DVXuser.com. I'm not in any way trying to replicate that excellent forum—I highly suggest that anyone who's a member here should also be there. I think you'll find the members very supportive, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if you met some collaborators there.

-Stu"

When someone there slightly dissed DVXuser (forget what they said, but it wasn't too bad) Stu said this:

"... I wish you hadn't said that.
DVXuser has a broad range of members but on the whole I find them to be remarkably supportive and positive, and I want them all to feel welcome here should they decide to join (after buying the book of course

). On the other hand, in no way am I trying to do double duty with that list, or "compete" with it. My only wish for this list is that, in its own small way, it should grow to have the same level of positivity and support found on DVXuser. I think we're off to a good start.

-Stu"

Anyway ... that's the way you do it!

INTERESTING Thread . . . makes one stop and think just how much we tend to take for granted.

Makes me want to stop for a sec and say a heartfelt thanks to Jarred and all the moderators who make this incredible site work, and to agree with Jack (gawd) but he 's right, yes, this is exactly the way you do it.

ALL these kinds of sites are a TON of work - I think most folks don't realize how much work it takes to maintain, moderate, foster, handle all the myriad BS it takes to keep these things up and running.

Esp. the volunteer moderators - truly giving of themselves.

Kudos.

Eh, I always found the creative cow forum cluttered and uninformed anyhow.

Cluttered I'd agree with, but uninformed? No more or less than any other large on line industry community, IMO. Many people make the rounds between DVXuser, the Cow, DVinfo, etc., as well as blogs like HD4NDs, ProLost, and Little Frog in HD as each site fills it's own niche.

Hat's off to Jarred! Hip Hip, Hooray!!!!!

Seriously, man. Thanks for all you do. This site really does rock.

If you want to get banned from some of these other heavily moderated sites just mention the fact the progressive scanning is better than interlace scanning. The Sony moderators of these other sites really got upset when Cannon introduced the 24p HV20 which got a great review and effectively stole the marketshare of the interlaced Sony cameras. And of course there is no Sony handheld camera now available that holds a candle to the progressive scan capabilities of the Panasonic HVX 200 which features variable framerate such as 24p and 60p unless you want to wait for the XDCAM EX. It really seams funny when Sony moderators call advocates of progressive scanning trolls and then Sony produce a camera to capture the troll market.
