What Adobe Premiere versions support HDV footage?

I currently have an older suite which consists of...

Premiere Pro 1.5
After Effects 6.5 Standard
Encore 1.5

I am upgrading to HDV footage with a Canon XH-A1 and I am wondering what versions for the above three programs i need?

I call support and they said I need to upgrade to...

Premiere Pro 2.0 $199
After Affects 7.0 Pro $199
Encore 2.0 $199

So I might as well upgrade to the new CS3 package for $799.

So I am wondering if $699 upgrading individually or $799 for the latest suite the cheapest I can get into Adobe software that supports HDV?

Can I use my existing versions and go with something like AspectHD or CineformHD? Basically wondering what my cheapest options are for supporting HDV footage for editing, effects, and authoring in adobe software.

Thanks
Tom

Get CS3. For the A1 you need a preset for 24F mode which I'm not sure is available for 1.5.1 (the patch for 1.5 that supports HDV). And if you're going to update to 2.0 then might as well go the extra $100 for CS3.

Well you can spend $500 on Cineform Aspect HD that will allow you to use HDV with ppro 1.5...and that works well together, or you can spend $800 and upgrade to CS3 and get new versions of all Adobe products. That's your best options.

PP2 takes the HDV from my HD100 just fine, no third party necessary. Check the Canon site as well as Adobe for possible patches and drivers. It might work with PP1.5. At this point, it would be kind of foolish to upgrade to 2, and pretty pricey to upgrade the whole suite if you don't need to.

Canon has no drivers listed on their website for the A1 at all. And Adobe denies 1.5 can support HDV footage, I think in a sales attempt for CS3. I do remember someone mentioning a 1.5 HDV patch some time ago. Where might I find this?

And premiere is just one piece of the puzzle. Is there a path for AE 6.5 standard and Encore 1.5 as well?

The only way you can work with hdv in 1.5 is cineform, and the 24f framerate can only be suppored with cineform, in either 1.5 or 2. I'm not trying to push aspect hd on you, but in your case its probably the best way to get what you need out of what you are working with right now.

How would Cineform stack up to CS3 for handling HDV footage? Does CS3 support all the framerates of the A1 camera?

I'll probably end up shelling out the $800 for CS3, but I'm holding out hope that I don't have to. Hopefully they'll have a CS3 30 day trial period so I can give it a test run.

That I am not sure of. I am pretty sure that hdv editing is not available for the free trial version......that doesn't make any sense to me.

Thanks for the links.

Are there any updates for After Effects v6.5 standard or perhaps newer versions for HDV footage? What about Encore 1.5 updates?

If the programs don't have an "Update Now" feature, you can always go to the Adobe site for news, updates, and discussions.

I just looked in the presets for After Effects 6.5 Standard and they list two HD composition presets. Will that produce true HD quality titles and effects or are those presets just HD dimensions?

After Effect is fully compatible with most type of footage, including HDV. What do you mean by "HD quality and effect"? With AE it's simple to create compositions with any size and frame rate or you can simply drag the file into the timeline and it automatically create a composition with the necessary attributes.

Thanks Jade. What about encore? Can you create HD menus and author in HD? So if encore is compatible as well. All I would need to do is upgrade to PPRO 2.0 and download the update. Rather than the whole CS3 package.

And AFX 6.5 handles Mpeg-2 horribly!

AFX 7.0 handles it a little better, but i've had rendering issues. If you use AFX heavily, or do more than just basic cuts I strongly reccomend getting some intermediary codec other than Mpeg-2 for the CS2 video suite.

I'm still waiting to see if CS3 handles mpeg-2 better.

You can't burn HD footage into normal DVD and I don't think Encore 2.0 supports HD-DVD or Blu-Ray authoring. I know that Premiere CS3 will support Blu-Ray authoring but it might not have the same flexibility as Encore; check out the CS3 version of Encore.

Yea, it's just the nature of the HDV beast I guess. I doubt if CS3 will be any better.
