FCP thinks 23.98 footage is 29.97

I'm using FCP on a quad core Mac Pro. Capturing 24pa footage from a Sony HDV deck. Settings are set to capture with pulldown removal and sequence is set to use 23.98. After I capture, the footage is in my bin, but FCP reads it as 29.97. I drop it in a timeline and it needs to render. I drop it in CT and it tells me that it is truly 23.98. Any suggestions so I don't have to render? These tapes are fresh and all footage is 24pa.

From which camera? Not all Sony HDV cameras are capable of actually recording 24p. Most are 1080i60.

It's quite possible that the HDV deck is not sending over the flags properly. Supporting 24pA for Panasonic cameras is probably rock bottom on the list of Sony HDV deck priorities. I'd try another DV deck or the camera if that fails. And make sure you're using this procedure:

Thanks Noah, I'll try using the DVX to capture with and see if that will work. The strange thing is that sometimes, it will turn out as 23.98 but here lately it's just not for some reason. But Cinema Tools knows that it is, so it's weird.

That happens to me almost every time I capture 24P footage from anything other than the DVX itself.

I've been over and over it, but still the same issue's.

Quick fix: open the footage in cinema tools and analyze it. Then simply drop in in FCP and it *should* work (does for me, anyway)...

I get the same problem. I use a small Canon Elura DV to capture with. Mostly 24pA comes in as 23.98 but sometimes (even on the same tape, just the next clip) it'll come in as 29.97. I open in CT and use the "Conform" button; it'll say current frame rate is 23.98 conform to 23.98. After this FCP will give the Media Offline warning and not be able to reconnect. I have to delete the clip from the browser and drop it back in from Finder. Then all is well.
