Hey guys,
Matty_G and I are testing his SGPro and my M2 tomorrow 6/16/07 at my place around 3 or 4. anyone with a Brevis Care to join us? Let me know
thanks,
Luis
Testing went very well, Wayne I'll try to be good and leave evaluation of the results to Siniarch and Matty_g - the two guys who actually own the HVXes and adapters. Also, Siniarch, the host of this week's camera tests, was a real gentleman - he bought us food, set up lights and allowed us to generally invade his home for quite a long time! I don't want to steal his thunder... also maybe it's best that people just look at the footage.
All I can say for now is that your product performed admirably, with great edge-to-edge sharpness and minimal light loss. Siniarch had a stack of cool lenses and they all worked wonderfully. Generally in line with the (very good) results that Matt Garrett and I got before (full clips res clips downloadable at http://www.freshdv.com/2007/06/nikon-lens-tests-with-the-sgpro-35mm-adapter-and-hvx200.html ).
Hey guys,
First I just wanted to thank Matty_g and BruceAllen, for taking the time to come over and perform the test with me.
I haven't had the time to go through the footage, but I must admit I was impressed with the light performance of the SGPro. (I own a redrock micro) As far as light loss, it is just as people anticipated, the M2 loses about 1 f-stop more than the sGPro. which is Huge.
As for Bokeh, I still have to look at the footage side by side. but my feeling was that I liked the M2 better.
When and if you do look at the test, please keep in mind that I suspect my M2 is not well calibrated. Hence, the edge to edge sharpness was not what it should be on a well calibrated unit. I will contact Redrock to verify this, but I had a problem with my screen pulsating highlights. and I opened it to try to fix it, but I don't think I got it.
Here are my impressions so far.
I like my M2 and I like the SGpro. Both are made well, though I think these instruments are so sensitive to any misalignment that unless you get a perfect batch, you might have to re-adjust them. (like mine. or DC's Brevis)
I really wished my M2 could give me one more F-Stop. (I'm assuming its just an issue of changing the GG.) And my other beef with the M2 is the Hardmount.
The SGpro seemed to have a hard mount that had little to no play.
My hardmount was self made with a variety of step-down rings and by breaking the lens of a polarizer in order to be able to screw from one side without unscrewing on the other side. The problem is that this polarizer has a little play, and in my opinion, too much play on the adapter. I don't know what the new Redrock Hardmount solution looks like, but if its just as mine and it has that much play, then it should be re-examined.
I'm not about to sell my M2. I like it. in fact I'm buying the Redrock Follow Focus next week. I believe in the company, and I really like the fact that I'm able to speak with them, and or send them an email. The fact that I met Brian Valente from Redrock a few times also makes a difference to me. I like the person to person interaction. I will get my M2 fixed and I'll let you know.
the problem with my M2 is very minor and the pulsing is barely noticeable, so I think we were still able to get a good test. specially regarding light and light loss.
if anyone has any questions, please just post them or PM me.
I'll try to get some results and charts once I get a chance.
i do like that dreamy bokeh of the m2 but i bet thats where thats the reason for that etxra stop of light.but i think for these test it will boil down to your needs.
interesting. To my eyes ( Opinion alert) the SGPro to look the most like film. I use the same lenses ive been shooting stills with for years, and the Sg reproduces the results look exactly.
no i very much agree with you on the sgpro looking filmic tim thats why i jumped on board not to mention the extra perk of it being edge to edge sharp from what i've seen.in my opinion from just the footage i've seen the m2 bokeh just looks a tad bit more pronounced which for me i love the cleaner look of the sgpro with still having that lovely bokeh minus the edge fall off and light loss that you get compared to the sg pro.still i think both aapters produce very filmic images.
It seems both those adapters are excellent. I was tinkering with an M2 over the weekend. A great product and a great company. Brian Valente is always there to aide and assist the customers.
I have yet to try an SGPro but I'd love to someday. Wayne Kinney seems like a helluva guy too.
My Brevis is currently being serviced by Dennis Wood over at Cinevate. He tells me he is installing an upgrade to my unit so I'm very curious what it will be like when I get it back. Oh, and that CF1L diffuser is ace!
Too bad DC didn't get to sport his brevis at the test. It would be cool to see comparisons with the new new L series diffuser as well as the low grain cf3's out.
Which SGpro Rev# was used? Image-wise, the 3 is no different than 2, correct?
that I have no idea Arrik.
Also, just to let you guys know. I contacted RedrockMicro on Monday and by monday night I had a reply and the will try to help me adjust my adapter before cinegear if possible (this weekend) That's why I love the company. Very personable and always trying to help.
Thanks Redrock !!!!!
i don't know if it's just me but i didn't get that same customer service from red rock when i had my m2.as a matter of fact there was time i was having trouble setting mine up and contacted them and i wouldn't get a response at all.i personaly thought the customer support war very poor at best.
Yeah, I was pretty interested in seeing the brevis myself. Especially it's low light ability with the new diffusers.
The sgpro unit was a r2 unit. I don't think anything was changed imagewise on the r3.
I think Matt, that your unit has the older style diffuser/GG. At the time I was doing your batch of Rev2's, i was experimenting with diffuser properties, working closely with an optics company. The footage posted by user 'Smettli' for example, uses the newer diffuser, with better bokeh rendition.
We did not commit 100% to this newer diffuser until Rev3. Shame really, I would have liked your unit to have the newer diffuser in, for good comparision with the M2.
Its always something I can change for you, though...
hey wayne, will my rev 3 diffuse/gg share the same light loss as the rev 2.i've been told that the light loss on the rev 2 is very acceptable and was just wondering if i'll benefit from rev 3 in terms of light loss and still gain that upgraded bokeh?
