What's the best (affordable) way to stream LIVE video on the net?

I'd like to stream LIVE video of a event we have coming up. And my research hasn't revealed the best way to go about this? I have an unmetered Linux server, which would be able to handle the load for the small market I am in. So I would like to avoid using an all in one streaming service that charges an arm and a leg for bandwidth. Are there any services or software that support live streaming on a Linux server?

Would I be able to stream directly from a SD or HDV camera to the web? Or would I need to use a low quality 'web cam' style camera?

Any help, pointers, links are all appreciated!

Thanks
Tom

Check with your Host, Because alot of the time when you have " unmetered " its still capped at some point, whats the uplink connection to the server, is it dedicated? What Bandwidth provider is it on?

True, there is nothing truly 'unmetered' but it's not capped in the sense of 1000gb or whatever. The limitation is the 10mb/s line it's on. Would the limitation of how many simultaneous users be equated by the line speed 10mb divided by the streaming bitrate? Such as 200kb/sec (10240k line divided by 200kb stream equals 51 simultaneous streams). Is that how you factor it or am I way off? For this event I could get it on a 100mb line so if the above is right, that'd be around 500 users.

But my main question is how I get the video from my camera live to the web on a linux server. Don't understand what I need to make that work. I'm a PC guy, so any Mac solutions are out.

Thanks

On a linux server your options are limited, you can try NSV tools to encode, i would do around 400K for your push.
