In a recent short I was working on I felt that a character should have pauses at certain points in a conversation (working with non-actors). However, the question that they kept asking was how long of a pause it should be. There wasn't any camera move I was doing so there wasn't any requirement of pace, but I couldn't think of a motivated answer to the question so I just estimated in seconds how long a pause should be.
It worked out decent in the end, but I know it could've been better. My question is, how do you get actors to judge the pauses for themselves (or for the characters) keeping them "in the moment" instead of just giving them time estimates?
