Firestore and corrupted footage

After 50 minutes of 720 all my footage is corrupted.

So a $2,000 turd (firestore) killed my $4.000 shoot. That last five mintues cannot be re-shot because it was a live event.

I guess there really is no alternative to P2.

When does the technology come to shoot 1080p on a new tech tape?
Harddrives suck, I have no trust in them and it feels like your playing the lottery every time you shoot.

Many things have been said over time about the FS-100, personally I didn't think much of it from the beginning. In my view Panasonic designed this camera to be used with P2 Cards and that's what one should use with it. For me it was something I was in terms with before getting my HVX...

They may advertise the use of the FS-100 and I can understand documentary, or on the run/event users that need the extra recording time, but the whole camera structure and connectivity doesn't seem to support the FS-100 in a way that one should trust it. I find that cameras like the JVC HD100-250 are better suited for firestore usage....

Some have used it with success, but it still doesn't take away the fact that problems are very likely to arise...

Never. Tape's dead, no manufacturer is developing any new tape format that I know of. The last new tape format was HDV, introduced almost three years ago. AFAIK there will never be a new tape format.

The current media being actively developed include hard disk from Sony & JVC & Red (and the Rev variant of hard disk from Thomson), optical disc (blu-ray from Sony, and mini-DVD from several manufacturers) and solid state (from every major manufacturer except JVC); Red and Sony and Panasonic and Thomson and Ikegami are all introducing solid-state memory recording.

Hello Gregg,

I read some of your other posts about this problem and am wondering if you can pinpoint what happened? You said that the footage was playing in a non-linear editor, but you didn't think it was organized properly so you hit the "organize P2" function on the FS-100 and that's when you couldn't access the footage anymore. Is that an accurate summary? Basically I'm asking if there was a specific cause (or chain of events) that you can identify or if the footage just stopped being uncorrupted for no reason. I'm waiting on a used FS-100 I just bought to arrive and if there is a workflow issue that you've discovered I would certainly like to know how to avoid it. From all the posts I've read from people who have had problems with the FS-100 it sounds like they didn't follow the recommended method (as convoluted as it might be) for capturing footage to the device and then moving it off the device for archiving and editing. When you were testing the device before the shoot did it give any indication that it was going to lose footage? I've got a shoot coming up next month and want to be as well versed as I can in the potential issues with the gear I'll be shooting with (HVX200 + FS-100) so I hopefully won't lose any footage. Any tips you can give would be helpful. Thanks.

Andrew

The Firestore worked fine till about 50 minutes into the shoot. Then I noticed the screen had changed to "please wait" or something to that effect. We turned it off and turned it back on. We played back the footage to see how far we gotten before it stopped. We saw that the some of the footage had been corrupted (like a dropout that never ends). We would get the unit to begin recording again but soon it would have the same problem.

No, it was not hot. We were in an air conditioned place and the unit was ventilated.

No, I was not bumping it or moving it around. We had it sitting on a desk.

I hope this warning saves someone else from trusting their shoot to this POS.
